BALTIMORE \u2014 Army apologized that due to a fogged in flight it didn’t send a contingent to media event Wednesday promoting this year’s Army-Navy football game here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Navy Athletic Director Chet Gladchuk didn’t buy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We’ve got a saying at Navy: ‘No excuses, nobody cares.’ That’s the way I feel about it,” Gladchuk said from the speakers’ platform at a luncheon following media interviews at M&T Bank Stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Navy is a 30 minute drive from the stadium where the game will be played Dec. 13. Gladchuk, Coach Ken Niumatalolo and two players attended and met the press in advance of the 115th renewal of the series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Army Athletic Director Boo Corrigan, Coach Jeff Monken and two Army players were no-shows. The coach and players were made available to the media by teleconference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The stadium is operated by the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. Gladchuk apologized to Ravens President Dick Cass, who was in attendance. Gladchuk also apologized to the City of Baltimore and sponsors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I don’t speak for Army. I don’t pretend to speak for Army. I never speak for Army,” Gladchuk said over the microphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But, he said, “It’s just unfortunate that they could not find a way to be here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Army Executive Athletic Director Bob Beretta, who came in a day earlier, was in attendance. He made a public apology at the luncheon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Afterward, Beretta said, “They got fogged in. We had flight arrangements. \u2026 They got socked in.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Beretta said coming in the night before from New York (a drive of about 240 miles to Baltimore) wasn’t an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The weather up there last night was freezing rain and snow. So it really wasn’t a safe environment last night either,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Did Beretta take Gladchuk’s remarks as a zinger?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“No, we have great respect for the folks at the Naval Academy,” he said. “I think that everyone was disappointed. I know that Boo and Coach Monken were very disappointed not to be here, and the players were disappointed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the luncheon, Gladchuk elaborated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“I don’t know what their issues are. I just know that the City of Baltimore deserves \u2013 with the energy and the commitment they’ve made to this game \u2013 they deserve everything that we can give them,” he said. ” \u2026 And I’m disappointed that Army wasn’t able to be here.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gladchuk said talk to Army about the reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“But in the final analysis, it’s OUR package,” he said. “It’s not their package. It’s not my package. It’s our package. It’s the academies. \u2026 What we talk about is we deliver on every front, okay, and we didn’t deliver today.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
