{"id":35261,"date":"2016-04-24T09:04:09","date_gmt":"2016-04-24T09:04:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2016\/04\/24\/congress-takes-its-first-step-toward-killing-the-military-draft\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:31:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:31:12","slug":"congress-takes-its-first-step-toward-killing-the-military-draft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2016\/04\/24\/congress-takes-its-first-step-toward-killing-the-military-draft\/","title":{"rendered":"Congress takes its first step toward killing the military draft"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The military draft may be headed for the scrap heap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The House Armed Services Committee <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">lawmakers <\/span>will include instructions to <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">re-<\/span>examine the <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">viability of the current <\/span>Selective Service program&#8217;s viability\u00a0and possible &#8220;<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">other <\/span>alternatives&#8221; as part of its review of the<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">ir<\/span> annual defense authorization bill next week, staffers confirmed on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move comes following months of <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">congressional <\/span>hand-wringing over whether women will be forced to register for the draft as part of the military&#8217;s<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">, after military officials announced<\/span> plans to open combat jobs\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">posts <\/span>to all troops regardless of gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bipartisan group of House lawmakers \u2014 several of whom sit on the committee \u2014 has already offered legislation to abolish the Selective Service System, calling it an outdated vestige of military history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Committee officials said the authorization bill language is not geared toward keeping or eliminating the Selective Service system, but reviewing the cost and operation of a program that hasn&#8217;t been used to fill the ranks since 1973.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency&#8217;s activities cost taxpayers roughly $23 million each year, and a 2012 Government Accountability Office report questioned whether the system could even provide a list of draftees to the Defense Department if called upon to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meanwhile, military officials over the last two decades have repeatedly downplayed the idea of reviving the military draft, saying today&#8217;s all-volunteer force is the most highly trained and disciplined in American history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While returning to the draft could connect more Americans to the armed forces, it would almost certainly also dilute that skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several lawmakers have also voiced plans to introduce related amendments to the authorization bill to specifically exempt women from registering for the draft, arguing that Pentagon officials haven&#8217;t fully thought out the ramifications of opening combat jobs to women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The authorization bill, which sets spending guidelines and policy priorities for next fiscal year, will be marked up by the armed services committee on Thursday<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">\u00a0April 28<\/span>.
