Those forces include military police, medical personnel and engineers, DoD said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, the Pentagon announced it would be sending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/01\/15\/dod-extends-border-deployment-to-september\/\" target=\"_blank\">3,750 additional active duty troops<\/a> to the border to support Department of Homeland Security agents and extend sections of concertina wire barrier another 150 miles. The additional forces will bring the total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/02\/03\/pentagon-sending-another-3750-troops-to-us-mexico-border\/\" target=\"_blank\">active-duty presence there to 4,250<\/a>. In addition, there are 2,300 National Guard forces deployed to the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/01\/04\/homeland-security-asks-for-more-dod-help-at-border\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4947006.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Homeland Security asks for more DoD help at border<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The current DHS request runs through Jan. 31.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday night in his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump continued to press his case for a border wall, saying that the barrier he seeks would be a \u201csmart, strategic, see-through steel barrier \u2014 not just a simple concrete wall.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt will be deployed in the areas identified by border agents as having the greatest need, and as these agents will tell you, where walls go up, illegal crossings go way down,&#8221; Trump said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Disagreements over funding for the wall led to last month\u2019s government shutdown and could lead to another shutdown when temporary funding for the federal government expires Feb. 15. After Trump\u2019s speech, Democrats doubled-down in their objection to wall funding, stating in the party\u2019s official response that \u201cAmerica is made stronger by the presence of immigrants, not walls.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fiscal year 2018 the Pentagon spent $132 million on active duty support along the border and $103 million on the National Guard presence. DoD estimates it will spend an additional $448 million in fiscal year 2019 on both National Guard and active duty-supported border security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/02\/06\/new-mexico-governor-pulls-national-guard-troops-from-border\/\" target=_blank>New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham<\/a>, a Democrat, announced Tuesday that she was pulling back the approximately 100 National Guard forces stationed along their state\u2019s border, stating that \u201cNew Mexico will not take part in the president\u2019s charade of border fear-mongering by misusing our diligent National Guard troops,\u201d according to a statement reported by the Associated
