Brian Bourgeois.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naval Special Warfare Command has released few other details so far on what happened, but Bourgeois, 43, was injured during the training evolution Saturday in Virginia Beach, Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was taken to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital following the accident and died there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAn incident like this weighs heavily on us all,\u201d Capt. Donald Wetherbee, commodore for Naval Special Warfare Group 2, said in a statement. \u201cBrian was as tough as they come, an outstanding leader and a committed father, husband and friend. This is a great loss to everyone who knew him. He will be greatly missed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wetherbee said that the command is providing support to Bourgeois\u2019s family and fellow unit members.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2021\/04\/28\/navy-seals-to-shift-from-counterterrorism-to-global-threats\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/49973968817_2bee563f1f_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy SEALs to shift from counterterrorism to global threats<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy\u2019s special operations forces have been focused on counterterrorism operations but now must begin to evolve beyond those missions.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SEAL Team 8\u2032s executive officer has temporarily assumed command of the Virginia-based unit, according to the command, which did not identify the officer, citing operational security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the details of the accident remain under investigation, the command said the findings will be made available \u201cat the appropriate time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brian\u2019s wife and family were with him when he passed, said Rear Adm. H.W. Howard, the commanding officer of Naval Special Warfare Command, in a message to the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur thoughts and prayers are with the Bourgeois family \u2014 and we will ensure our community remains in support of and in relationship with Brian\u2019s family and his five children, for life,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBrian was one of our very best leaders, who possessed all the attributes to make our force effective,\u201d Howard said in an official statement. \u201cWe will miss his charismatic leadership and faithful stewardship of our standard. His legacy carries on in teammates he served with, led and mentored.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bourgeois attended the U.S. Naval Academy, was commissioned in May 2001 and went on to serve in the naval special warfare community for more than two decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star with Combat \u201cV\u201d device and the combat action ribbon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Navy records show he made commander in 2017 and joined SEAL Team 8 in November 2020.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cmdr.
