{"id":37836,"date":"2020-11-02T20:30:32","date_gmt":"2020-11-02T20:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/11\/02\/commandants-reading-list-includes-books-about-female-marines-for-the-first-time-but-is-it-enough\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:41:06","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:41:06","slug":"commandants-reading-list-includes-books-about-female-marines-for-the-first-time-but-is-it-enough","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/11\/02\/commandants-reading-list-includes-books-about-female-marines-for-the-first-time-but-is-it-enough\/","title":{"rendered":"Commandant\u2019s Reading List includes books about female Marines for the first time \u2015 but is it enough?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps overhauled the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/20\/here-are-the-46-books-on-the-2020-marine-commandants-reading-list\/\" target=_blank>C<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/20\/here-are-the-46-books-on-the-2020-marine-commandants-reading-list\/\" target=_blank>ommandant\u2019s Reading List<\/a> in 2020 in a modernization effort to become more relevant to the modern-day Marine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of the process, the Corps, for the first time, included two books about the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/09\/01\/marines-lay-out-plans-for-gender-integrating-boot-camp-at-the-platoon-level\/\" target=_blank> experience of women in war<\/a>: \u201cWomen at War: Iraq, Afghanistan, and Other Conflicts,\u201d by James E. Wise Jr. and Scott Baron, and \u201cHesitation Kills: A Female Marine Officer\u2019s Combat Experience in Iraq,\u201d by Jane Blair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inclusion of two books about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/02\/mother-forced-to-choose-between-her-babys-health-and-career-faces-removal-from-the-marine-corps\/\" target=_blank>women in the Marine Corps<\/a> was seen by many as progress, but some noted that since one of the books was written by two men, that the Marine Corps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/09\/25\/no-more-yellow-footprints-on-parris-island-corps-considers-closing-south-carolina-and-san-diego-recruit-training-depots-to-open-third-training-base\/\" target=_blank>stumbled on its execution.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am excited because I will take progress any day,\u201d Tracy Crow, the co-author of \u201cIt\u2019s My Country Too: Women\u2019s Military Stories from the American Revolution to Afghanistan Illustrated Edition,\u201d told Marine Corps Times. \u201cBut I mean if we\u2019re going to look at reality to be jumping up and down and thrilled because of one book and then a history that\u2019s been thrown in there, written by men filtered by men \u2026 when there\u2019s an alternative by women &#8230; the bar is so low.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/10\/20\/terminal-lances-max-uriarte-stories-of-female-marines-added-to-radically-changed-commandants-reading-list\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MAR-Letters-0129.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Terminal Lance\u2019s Max Uriarte, stories of female Marines added to radically changed Commandant\u2019s Reading List<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Marine Corps released a radically different Commandant\u2019s Reading List on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The book \u201cWomen at War\u201d is a compilation of interviews from thirty female American veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not that men necessarily write bad books, it\u2019s just that women understand our experiences with military service in a unique way,\u201d said Jerri Bell, Navy veteran and co-author of, \u201cIt\u2019s My Country Too.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell\u2019s and Crow\u2019s complaints about the list were echoed by other veterans and authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s admirable that someone finally allowed women into the Commandant\u2019s reading list club,\u201d Kate Germano, a Marine veteran told Marine Corps Times in an email. \u201cBut wouldn\u2019t it be enlightening to read about the real, day to day, lived experiences of current day women Marines as told by women Marine authors to help shape policies and the culture rather than reading about it in yet another academic study after stuff blows up?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While in the Corps, Germano served in Marine Corps recruiting and was the commander of the all-female 4th Recruit Training Battalion on Parris Island, South Carolina. She was relieved of her command of the training battalion in 2015 for having a \u201chostile, unprofessional and abusive\u201d command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Germano has defended her leadership of the battalion and since authored the book, \u201cFight like a Girl,\u201d about her experience in command and the systemic gender bias involved in Marine Corps recruit training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since Germano retired, the Corps has implemented some of her then-controversial training methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need more stories from more perspectives because that\u2019s what\u2019s going to allow the Marine Corps to continue evolving,\u201d Teresa Fazio, Marine veteran and author of \u201cFidelis,\u201d told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anuradha Bhagwati, Marine veteran and author of \u201cUnbecoming, a Memoir of Disobedience,\u201d said the biggest issue with the list was not necessarily its lack of women authors or books about women in the Marine Corps, but the list\u2019s inability to deal with the cultural upheaval of our time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf misogyny and racism are still very much at the core of Marine Corps culture, why wouldn\u2019t half of those books be about dealing with misogyny and racism in the United States, or overseas?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the list wants to remain focused on the military, Bell said, there are plenty of voices of veterans that still need to be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps acknowledges that there are plenty of authors with valuable lessons for Marines, and plans to update the list more frequently than it had in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe CMC professional reading program will update the reading list twice per year, which will enable a greater variety of authors to be included,\u201d Stephenson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe committee\u2019s primary focus is on the content of the material and providing Marines with resources to advance their professional knowledge,\u201d Capt. Sam Stephenson, a Marine Corps spokesman told Marine Corps Times, in a late October email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The website hosting the Commandant\u2019s reading list has a form and email available for anyone seeking to <a href=\"https:\/\/grc-usmcu.libguides.com\/usmc-reading-list-2020\/contact\" target=_blank>recommend specific books. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inclusion of the two books comes as Marine Corps Commandant Gen. David Berger calls for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/06\/23\/i-had-to-be-on-a-look-into-the-career-of-the-corps-first-female-marine-ground-combat-battalion-commander\/\" target=_blank>increased gender diversity<\/a> in the ranks and for more women to enter the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2016\/03\/10\/marines-gear-up-to-train-more-women-now-that-all-combat-jobs-open\/\" target=_blank>jobs once denied to them <\/a>based on their gender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Kyleanne Hunter, Marine veteran and adjunct senior fellow, military, veterans and society program, the list is just another sign that the commandant is addressing gender diversity in a way that will outlast his tenure as the top Devil Dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reading list \u201cis a big deal because it\u2019s out there and it lasts,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That gives hope that this will actually be lasting meaningful change, not just a one-off.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the two books on women in the Marine Corps, the list includes a total of seven books authored or co-authored by women.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt appears that progress is being made under current Marine Corps leadership that we haven\u2019t always seen in the past,\u201d Kayla Williams, Army veteran and
