{"id":37994,"date":"2018-09-25T18:38:41","date_gmt":"2018-09-25T18:38:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/09\/25\/the-marine-corps-ditched-the-120-mm-mortar-but-this-might-replace-it\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:40:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:40:25","slug":"the-marine-corps-ditched-the-120-mm-mortar-but-this-might-replace-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2018\/09\/25\/the-marine-corps-ditched-the-120-mm-mortar-but-this-might-replace-it\/","title":{"rendered":"The Marine Corps ditched the 120 mm mortar, but this might replace it"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps has ditched the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/12\/16\/marines-introduce-deadly-new-mortar-round\/\" target=_blank>120mm Expeditionary Fire Support System<\/a>, but now it needs a flexible and portable system that can match its range and lethality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loitering munitions or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/04\/23\/the-corps-is-looking-for-a-tube-launched-suicide-drone\/\" target=\"_blank\">suicide drones<\/a> may offer the Corps the solution it\u2019s looking for, affording Marines portability, range and a variety of payloads for either electronic attack or kinetic strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One Maryland-based company called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/07\/20\/the-corps-wants-15-suicide-drones-swarming-from-the-hands-of-one-front-line-marine\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mistral Group <\/a>could provide the Corps with a suite of suicide drones varying in size and payload that melds with its expeditionary and sea-based nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mistral\u2019s series of loitering munitions could aid the Corps on the battlefield by providing it a top-down attack capability. The modern battlefield has become littered with a host of shoulder-fired and ground-based anti-tank systems from BGM-71 TOWs to Russian Kornet portable guided missile systems, Yossi Gez the vice president of marketing for Mistral Inc., told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/07\/20\/the-corps-wants-15-suicide-drones-swarming-from-the-hands-of-one-front-line-marine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/raven.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Corps wants 15 suicide drones swarming from the hands of one front-line Marine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Corps has successfully tested a single operator controlling six drones at once.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s all about ensuring the Corps maintains an unfair advantage on the battlefield, Gez said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mistral\u2019s Univision Hero 120 drone could be a suitable replacement for the Corps\u2019 120mm mortar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The drone is man-portable, air launched and features a Javelin multipurpose warhead, meaning a squad of Marines could dispatch the system to take out enemy troops or armored vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hero 120 also has a flight time of one hour and a 40-km range, making it an attractive option to replace the cumbersome 120mm mortar system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mistral also offers a much larger suicide drone that packs extended range for the Corps\u2019 deep attack needs. The Hero 400 EC could aid the Corps in sea based or land-based missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Hero 400 EC boasts a 100-km range with an additional 30 minutes of loiter time. It packs a 22-pound warhead and has the ability to carry a variety of payloads for lethal strikes or electronic attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps has been increasingly interested in loitering munitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far the Marines have successfully tested six suicide drones controlled as a swarm by a single operator, and eventually wants to increase that number to 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in April, the Corps posted a request for information to industry leaders for a man-portable, tube-launched loitering munition with a range of 40-60 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But one concern the Corps has about fielding its future loitering munitions is the potential of reduced battlefield situation awareness if a drone operator is glued to his controller screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of this, the Corps want its systems to come with \u201cminimal operator burden,\u201d Capt. Matt Cornachio, a fires project officer with Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory, said during a media roundtable in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mistral says its suite of loitering munitions do just that. An operator on the ground who has control of the munition doesn\u2019t actually need to pilot the system, Gez explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multiple Mistral munitions could loiter overhead while a ground operator need only to select and identify a target for it to destroy, Gez said. This would allow Marines to stay focused on the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mistral also offers a smaller suicide drone called the Hero 30 that can take out troops and
