General Jay Silveria, the superintendent of the Air Force Academy, didn&#8217;t mince words when responding to an incident where racial slurs were written on a message board at the academy&#8217;s prep school. His message was simple: If you can&#8217;t respect others, &#8220;get out.&#8221; (U.S. Air Force Academy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a forceful speech to the entire Air Force Academy Thursday, Superintendent Lt. Gen. Jay Silveria said there would be zero tolerance for the display of racist attitudes, and urged anyone who disagreed to \u201cget out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silveria\u2019s appearance before an overflowing crowd that included all cadets, faculty, athletic coaches and academy leaders came after racial slurs, including \u201cgo home n*****r,\u201d were discovered Monday on the dormitory message boards of five black cadet candidates at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf you\u2019re outraged by those words, then you\u2019re in the right place,\u201d Silveria said. \u201cThat kind of behavior has no place at the prep school, it has no place at USAFA and it has no place in the United States Air Force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the incident took place at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, academy cadets should not dismiss the racist ideology as something limited to that location and that set of students, Silveria said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe would all be naive to think that everything is perfect here; we would be naive to think we shouldn\u2019t discuss this topic,\u201d Silveria said. \u201cWe would also be tone death not to think about the backdrop of what\u2019s going on in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2017\/09\/28\/racial-slurs-written-on-dorm-room-boards-of-black-air-force-academy-cadet-candidates\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Air-Force-Academy-cadets-in-front-of-chapel-medium-1.jpg-1.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Racial slurs written on dorm room boards of black Air Force Academy cadet candidates<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Racial slurs were written on the dormitory message boards of five black cadet candidates at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School earlier this week.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silveria cited racially charged protests in Ferguson, Charlottesville and the NFL as part of a series of national incidents that are impacting the discourse at the Air Force Academy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following protests in Charlottesville, Brig. Gen. Andrew Armacost , dean of faculty at Air Force Academy, brought people together to discuss the protest in civil discourse, Silveria noted, saying that it was a \u201cbetter idea\u201d than that scrawled on the message boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe received outstanding feedback from that session about Charlottesville,\u201d Silveria said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut I have a better idea &#8230; the power of that diversity comes together and makes us that much more powerful, that\u2018s a much better idea than small thinking and horrible ideas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silveria told those in attendance to reach for their phones and record him, so they could have a record of his words and \u201ctalk about them and share them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust in case you\u2018re unclear about where I stand on this topic &#8230; if you can\u2019t treat someone from another race or with different color skin with dignity and respect, then you need to get out,\u201d Silveria said.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The father of one of the cadets who was targeted with racial slurs spoke with Air Force Times before and after the speech. He said he appreciated Silveria\u2019s words and thought the superintendent handled everything in the right way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat I thought he did was appropriate. His tone and delivery was what was needed. I hate that he had to do it,\u201d the father said. \u201cI hate to sensationalize, [the incident was] stupid, but he took the necessary steps, and I think it was well-said, well-delivered and well-articulated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force Times is not identifying the cadet candidate or his parents to preserve their privacy. Silveria spoke to the cadet\u2019s father in the afternoon, following the speech, the father said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe had a good conversation. He basically just reiterated what he said. It\u2019s definitely something that\u2019s very serious and unfortunate,\u201d the father said. \u201cIt was greatly appreciated to hear from a general. I thought that was pretty profound, so I appreciate that.
