{"id":39330,"date":"2020-05-06T22:17:39","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T22:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/06\/heres-the-darpa-project-it-says-could-pull-the-navy-a-decade-forward-in-unmanned-technology\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:52:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:52:10","slug":"heres-the-darpa-project-it-says-could-pull-the-navy-a-decade-forward-in-unmanned-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/05\/06\/heres-the-darpa-project-it-says-could-pull-the-navy-a-decade-forward-in-unmanned-technology\/","title":{"rendered":"Here\u2019s the DARPA project it says could pull the Navy a decade forward in unmanned technology"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2013 A project inside the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/unmanned\/2020\/04\/20\/darpa-to-foster-urban-drone-swarm-tech-with-nine-new-contracts\/\" target=_blank> Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency<\/a> has the potential to pull the Navy\u2019s unmanned surface vessel aspirations forward a decade, a senior DARPA official said Wednesday at the annual C4ISR Conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DARPA\u2019s effort to develop a ship designed from the keel up to operate without humans, known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2020\/01\/21\/darpas-latest-mad-science-experiment-a-ship-designed-completely-without-humans\/\" target=_blank>NOMARS<\/a>\u201d for \u201cno mariners,\u201d is a separate effort from the Navy\u2019s quest to develop a family of large and medium unmanned surface vessels. But the benefits of that program, if successful, could be a giant leap forward for the concept the Navy is developing, said Mike Leahy, who heads the Tactical Technology Office at DARPA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy \u201cwill only be able to go so far with where the technology has matured,\u201d Leahy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re able to do is link to that group [developing USVs for the Navy], get information about what missions they are trying to accomplish, the sizing and other constraints, feed that into NOMARS project so that we can take the same class of ship \u2013 looking at the same ideas in terms of a hull form \u2013 and when we are successful we can dump that right into their tranche and pull that forward a decade from where it might have been on a traditional path.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/naval\/2019\/01\/15\/the-us-navy-moves-toward-unleashing-killer-robot-ships-on-the-worlds-oceans\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/sea_hunter.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">US Navy moves toward unleashing killer robot ships on the world\u2019s oceans<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Navy is planning to take the first few steps into a radical future, which, if it comes to pass, will upend how the fleet has fought since the Cold War.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy and DARPA have been closely linked in efforts to develop unmanned platforms but DARPA\u2019s NOMARs will remain an independent effort, Leahy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy has \u201cbeen involved in the source selection, they\u2019re involved in the testing we\u2019re doing, so that we can make sure that information is flowing,\u201d Leahy said. \u201cBut we will reserve the right to take risks that may not be in the direction they want to go. Because sometimes learning what does not work is even more valuable than what does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe physics is going to tell you what you need to know, and you can\u2019t cheat it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maintaining separate lines of effort is important because DARPA has the freedom to fail whereas failure in an acquisition program has higher stakes, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNOMARS is going and looking at \u2018Can I take people completely off ships,\u2019\u201d he explained. \u201cThat\u2019s a risky endeavor. We don\u2019t know if we\u2019re going to be able to do that. We don\u2019t know if that\u2019s going to pan out. You would not want to link an acquisition program directly to that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Another Option<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy is currently pursuing both a large and medium unmanned surface vessel that can perform missions for the surface Navy as a means of increasing aggregate naval power without wrapping a $2 billion hull around 96 missile tubes, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/the-drift\/2019\/12\/11\/cno-sounds-off-the-drift-season-ii-vol-iv\/\">Chief of Naval Operations Adm.
