{"id":39413,"date":"2018-06-01T18:44:18","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T18:44:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/06\/01\/its-official-the-us-navy-has-a-new-ship-killer-missile\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T21:55:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T21:55:44","slug":"its-official-the-us-navy-has-a-new-ship-killer-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/06\/01\/its-official-the-us-navy-has-a-new-ship-killer-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s official: The US Navy has a new ship killer missile"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Navy has selected the Norwegian Naval Strike Missile as its new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/surface-navy-association\/2018\/01\/10\/over-the-horizon-missile-competition-nearing-completion\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">over-the-horizon anti-ship missile <\/a>destined for the littoral combat ship and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2018\/05\/01\/us-navy-wants-future-ship-killing-missile-for-its-new-frigate-raytheon\/\" title=\"\" target=\"_blank\"> likely the service\u2019s future frigate as well<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The NSM, which was a joint submission between Kongsberg and Raytheon, was widely expected to win the competition after its main competitors \u2014 Boeing\u2019s extended range Harpoon and Lockheed Martin\u2019s Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile \u2014 dropped from contention. Both companies felt the competition was skewed towards the Raytheon\/Kongsberg offering, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/breaking-news\/2017\/05\/24\/lockheed-martin-drops-out-of-us-navy-missile-competition\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Defense News reported last May<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The introduction of the NSM to the fleet breaks the venerable Harpoon\u2019s decades-long lock on the surface over-the-horizon mission and is a huge boost to Kongsberg\u2019s ambitions in the U.S. market. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initial contract is listed at about $14.86 million but it could grow to as much as $848 million over the life of the contract.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It positions the missile well as the market for surface-to-surface missiles is expected to increase in the coming years, said Oeyvind Kolset with Kongsberg\u2019s missile systems outfit. Many of the word\u2019s anti-ship missiles are coming to the end of their service lives and the selection of the missile by the U.S. Navy bodes well for future sales, Kolset said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also a major victory for the European defense industry, which is seeing increasing interest from the U.S. Navy as it races to fill capabilities gaps in the face of competition with Russia and China. <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/digital-show-dailies\/dsei\/2017\/09\/01\/as-the-service-looks-to-fill-capabilities-gaps-the-us-navy-is-keeps-an-eye-overseas\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635937662467375640-gettyimages-515902256jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">As the service looks to fill capabilities gaps, the US Navy eyes foreign designs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">As the U.S. Navy looks to fill capability gaps in its small surface combatants, the service is taking a hard look at internationally developed weapons and systems.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a conference call, Raytheon\u2019s head of the Naval Strike Missile, Joint Strike Missile and Tomahawk programs said that his company was anxious to get started and that conversations with the Navy on exact details of how and where the first NSMs will be integrated began Friday morning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe just started dialogue with the customer, this has been a long competition and we are just now having those initial conversations with the U.S. Navy,\u201d Chris Daily said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Naval Strike Missile has a range of more than 100 nautical miles and has target-recognition capabilities that limit the need for another ship or aircraft to hold a track on the target. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In January, Rear Adm.
