{"id":39728,"date":"2018-03-06T18:20:40","date_gmt":"2018-03-06T18:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/03\/06\/amvets-unveils-new-effort-with-va-to-combat-veterans-suicide\/"},"modified":"2026-08-20T14:02:00","modified_gmt":"2026-08-20T14:02:00","slug":"amvets-unveils-new-effort-with-va-to-combat-veterans-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/03\/06\/amvets-unveils-new-effort-with-va-to-combat-veterans-suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"AMVETS unveils new effort with VA to combat veterans suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 AMVETS officials on Tuesday announced a new mental health care partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs that\u2019s part of a broader effort by both organizations to better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2016\/07\/07\/new-va-study-finds-20-veterans-commit-suicide-each-day\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">combat suicide among vulnerable veterans<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have to start saving lives, not just talking about it,\u201d said Sherman Gillums Jr., chief strategy officer for AMVETS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new initiative \u2014 nicknamed the HEAL program \u2014 comes the same week that VA officials are set to deliver plans to the White House to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2018\/01\/09\/new-trump-order-focused-on-preventing-suicide-among-new-vets\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">mental health services<\/a> to every service member leaving the ranks, in an effort to better identify troubled veterans and intervene <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2017\/10\/26\/survey-58-percent-of-iava-members-have-lost-a-veteran-to-suicide\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">before they harm themselves<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those plans are the culmination of a 60-day interagency review of mental health services and policies mandated by an executive order in January. At the time, President Donald Trump said the move meant that federal departments would take a closer look at \u201csupporting our veterans during their transition from uniformed service to civilian life, taking some of their difficulty away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/01\/09\/new-trump-order-focused-on-preventing-suicide-among-new-vets\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP_18005696539131.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New Trump order focused on preventing suicide among new vets<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move will require the Departments of Defense, Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security to work together on expanded mental health care access.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, VA Secretary David Shulkin called the moves an extension of his department\u2019s clinical work on suicide prevention. He acknowledged that many service members and veterans do not know enough about the services available to them, and called the coordination with AMVETS an important step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know that mental health care saves lives, and we can do more,\u201d he said. \u201cSo this is really important.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Research by the Naval Postgraduate School has found that veterans in their first year out of the military are almost three times more likely to take their own lives than individuals still serving. That has lead to a new focus on that first year of military transition, and outreach to those new veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The HEAL program (which stands for healthcare, evaluation, advocacy and legislation) includes a new AMVETS-run hotline for veterans to call for guidance on available resources, to be launched March 19. Email and online chat components are also being created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The veterans group is spending about $700,000 to pay for a team of clinicians to work with veterans, VA officials and other community advocates to better coordinate care options and measure the effectiveness of existing programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additional information on the services will be available in coming weeks <a href=\"http:\/\/amvets.org\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">on the group\u2019s web site<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An estimated 20 veterans a day nationwide commit suicide. VA research has found more than half of those are veterans who do not have regular contact with department health care or support programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To contact the Veteran Crisis Line, callers can dial 1-800-273-8255 and select option 1 for a VA staffer. Veterans, troops or their families members can also text 838255 or visit <a href=\"\/\/VeteransCrisisLine.net\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">VeteransCrisisLine.net <\/a>for
