Most of the increase came from Class C mishaps \u2015 accidents that cost between $50,000 to $500,000, or resulted in lost work days due to injury. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is still looking for the \u201cwhy,\u201d said Marine Corps Col. Anthony Bianca, head of aviation plans and programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/08\/the-death-toll-for-rising-aviation-accidents-133-troops-killed-in-five-years\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MISHAPS.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The death toll for rising aviation accidents: 133 troops killed in five years<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Amid the latest spike in aviation deaths, a newly published Military Times Crash Database shows manned warplane accidents have jumped 39 percent since the 2013 budget cuts.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the other services, the Marine Corps\u2019 latest spike in mishaps began in 2013, the same year that the automatic budget cuts known as sequestration took effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With a smaller budget, the Marine Corps cut overall flying hours; its manned attack helicopters, tiltrotors, fighter jets and cargo aircraft flew 60,000 hours less in fiscal 2017 than they did in fiscal 2013, according to service data. The Corps also cut skilled maintainers as part of mandated personnel cuts and lost experienced supervisors on its flight lines. <\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/06\/military-times-aviation-database\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Military Times Aviation Database<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Less than a year later, the security landscape changed dramatically. In 2014 the U.S. began a three-year air campaign against the Islamic State. China began militarizing man made islands in the South China Sea. To respond, the Marines pushed the most ready aircraft forward. Marine Corps mishaps began to rise, jumping 20 percent between 2013 and 2014. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Impact of cuts <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marines have not found a direct tie between accidents and funding, Bianca said. If a jet isn\u2019t ready, it won\u2019t fly, he said, so it wouldn\u2019t have a mishap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, defense analysts point to other factors in play, particularly the loss of experience in both pilots and maintainers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishaps-by-Airframe-Chart-Service-3-Marines.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishaps-by-Airframe-Chart-Service-3-Marines.jpg.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishaps-by-Airframe-Chart-Service-3-Marines.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishaps-by-Airframe-Chart-Service-3-Marines.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishaps-by-Airframe-Chart-Service-3-Marines.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishaps-by-Airframe-Chart-Service-3-Marines.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,864 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps aviators are now averaging 14 to 16 flight hours a month, the service said, but Bianca acknowledged that number is generated by taking the average of all flight hours across the service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s an average, right? Our deployed guys are way past that,\u201d Bianca said. \u201cSo when we say average flight hours, that\u2019s a really watered-down number.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capt. Chris Harrison, a Marine Corps spokesman, said deployed squadrons generate roughly 50 percent more flight hours per month than the 14- to 16-flight-hour average, which bumps up the hours across the fleet. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishapsn-TOTALS-with-sequester.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-19733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishapsn-TOTALS-with-sequester.jpg.jpg 1920w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishapsn-TOTALS-with-sequester.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishapsn-TOTALS-with-sequester.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishapsn-TOTALS-with-sequester.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Aviation-Mishapsn-TOTALS-with-sequester.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,864 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One F-18 pilot who asked not to be identified described the 14- to 16-hour average as \u201ctotal bullshit.\u201d Instead, the non-deployed squadron had a 30-day average of 3.5 hours, and its 60- to 90-day average was worse, the aviator said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA deploying unit gets its flight hours and it gets its pilots and gets it airplanes,\u201d Bianca said. Just-returned units, on the other hand, \u201care flight-time deprived.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/08\/navys-spike-in-aviation-mishaps-is-the-militarys-worst-up-82-percent\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6772428461_2d79437223_o.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Navy\u2019s spike in aviation mishaps is the military\u2019s worst, up 82 percent<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Class C accidents were the primary driver of a significant rise in Super Hornet mishaps.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior maintainers were cut, too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cuts weren\u2019t necessarily across the board and blind,\u201d Bianca said. \u201cWe did try to set criteria, but it turns out we weren\u2019t anchoring, at least from an aviation maintenance point of view,\u201d all of the additional experience and qualifications not captured by a person\u2019s occupational code. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An experienced flight engineer, with additional qualifications in tire maintenance, or oil analysis, \u201cthey\u2019ve done a lot of maintenance, they start to know things,\u201d Bianca said. And so we seek to train that back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Experienced depot contractors could not take up the slack, either, Bianca said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of the engineers got out during the sequestration,\u201d Bianca said. \u201cThen we said, \u2018We can hire you back.\u2019 And they said, \u2018Thank you very much \u2015 no, you are not reliable enough for me, government.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/04\/08\/some-rare-good-news-for-military-aviation-army-helicopter-accidents-on-the-decline\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/DOD_chinook-landing-in-snow_cal0418.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Some (rare) good news for military aviation: Army helicopter accidents on the decline<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Army aviation&#039;s mishap rates are faring far better than the other services in the years following the 2013 Congressional budget cuts.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo we couldn\u2019t get the experience back,\u201d Bianca said. \u201cI think the Air Force will tell you the same thing. So that meant that airplane that sat in the depot, it should have sat for six months. It turns out, it\u2019s in the depot for 18 months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 2016 the Marines were reporting only 31 percent of their F\/A-18 Hornets and 29 percent of their CH-53E fleet was able to fly. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The combined loss of skilled maintainers and pilot hours increases the chances a mishap will occur, defense analysts said. It also increases the chances that a potentially low-level incident could escalate to a Class A, when there\u2019s a death, total destruction of the aircraft, or damage totaling $2 million or more. From 2013 to 2017, 49 service members were killed in Marine Corps aviation accidents.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/02\/15\/lack-of-experienced-maintainers-is-fueling-the-corps-aviation-crisis\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"232\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/marine-maintainers.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lack of experienced maintainers is fueling the Corps&#8217; aviation crisis<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Some of the Corps&#039; most experienced maintainers left during the drawdown.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe compounding impact is there,\u201d said John Venable, a senior defense fellow at The Heritage Foundation and former F-16 command pilot with more than 4,400 flight hours. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is where your mishap rate grows,\u201d Venable said. \u201cYou got worse at everything if you flew two or less times a week. And the average units have been flying two or less times for five years. It lulls your ability to handle even mundane things.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Mishaps rose as flight hours fell<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Across the Marine Corps fleet; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 CH-53E Super Stallions flew 7,000 hours less in fiscal 2017 than in fiscal 2013, but mishaps rose from 10 to 17 in that time frame. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 F\/A-18 A through D Hornets flew 5,500 hours less in 2017 than 2013. Hornet mishaps spiked in 2015 and 2016; then dropped in 2017. However, the overall numbers were still slightly higher than when sequestration began \u2015 eight incidents in 2013 compared with 10 in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 C-130s flew 6,000 hours less in 2013 compared with 2017. Mishaps rose slightly during that time frame, from three per year to five.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/04\/05\/marines-identify-4-killed-in-ch-53e-crash\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Marine-crash.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines identify 4 killed in CH-53E crash<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The two pilots and two aircrew members were assigned to Heavy Helicopter Squadron 465.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost half of the lost hours came from two aircraft the service is phasing out: the AH-1W Super Cobra and the AV-8B Harrier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 Super Cobras flew 17,000 fewer hours in 2017 than they did in 2013, but incidence rates rose from two to four a year in that time frame<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 Harriers flew 7,500 hours less in 2017 than 2013. Mishaps spiked to 10 accidents each in 2014 and 2016, but overall the mishap rate has held steady, from five incidents in 2013 to four in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other hand, the flight hours of MV-22s rose over the past five years as more aircraft came online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2666 Ospreys flew 7,200 hours more in 2017 than they did in 2013 \u2015 however, mishaps rose, too. from 10 incidents in 2013 to 17 in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Class C Mishaps <\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From October 2013 to September 2017, Class C mishaps \u2015 accidents costing $50,000 to $500,000, or resulting in lost work days due to injury \u2015 rose from 40 to 69 a year, accounting for the largest portion of the overall increase. Most of those Class Cs involved CH-53E Super Stallions, F\/A-18 Hornets, MV-22 Ospreys, RQ-21A Blackjack drones and UH-1Y Venom helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"619\" height=\"282\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mishapdeinitions.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mishapdeinitions.JPG.jpg 619w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/mishapdeinitions.JPG.jpg?resize=300,137 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bianca said some of the rise can be attributed to the fact that the Marines\u2019 airframes have become more expensive and complex, so a relatively minor incident can quickly meet the $50,000 threshold. The Marines\u2019 smaller fleet of aircraft also means that it does not take many incidents to register a large percentage increase in accidents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The narratives in the mishap data, one-liners that describe the incidents, did not reveal one primary cause of the additional Class Cs. Aircraft were struck by lightning during carrier operations; towing and flight deck collisions occurred during taxi maneuvers, maintainers sustained injuries by falling or or getting struck by airframe components.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bianca said what the Marine Corps noticed was a rise in \u201cunforced errors,\u201d like a towing collision that occurred at home station, where there was not the added pressure of airstrike launches.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of the Class Charlies weren\u2019t dangerous,\u201d Bianca said. \u201cWhat we found in our independent readiness review [on] the air ground mishaps was nobody had a heightened sense of what\u2018s going on.\u201d <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rising mishaps have the Marine Corps\u2019 attention now, Bianca said, and the service is trying to improve maintainer awareness and working on other initiatives to address the issue. The Corps also will begin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/03\/23\/after-veto-threat-trump-signs-full-year-federal-budget-deal\/\" target=\"\">spending the extra money in its budget<\/a>, of course, but due to the time it takes to build replacement aircraft, it may take a while for that to have an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He cautioned against assuming the increased accident rate is tied directly to funding, but noted that the Marine Corps is looking at how to better mitigate the impact if forced budget cuts return. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat we can\u2019t do is accept that effect\u201d of rising mishaps, Bianca said. \u201cAnyone taking a long view [on the budget] will say that
