{"id":42492,"date":"2021-05-13T12:40:42","date_gmt":"2021-05-13T12:40:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/05\/13\/marine-corps-to-re-evaluate-body-composition-standards\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:50:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:50:23","slug":"marine-corps-to-re-evaluate-body-composition-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2021\/05\/13\/marine-corps-to-re-evaluate-body-composition-standards\/","title":{"rendered":"Marine Corps to re-evaluate body composition standards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is looking for volunteers to take multiple scans as it re-evaluates its<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/off-duty\/2020\/02\/24\/at-62-marine-vet-sets-the-guinness-record-with-8-plus-hour-plank\/\" target=\"_blank\"> body composition standards.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps hopes to get between 600 and 800 Marines to volunteer for body scans and X-rays that would take a detailed look at their body to implement more scientific standards, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.military.com\/daily-news\/2021\/04\/24\/marines-need-volunteers-help-them-reassess-body-standards.html\" target=\"_blank\">Military.com<\/a> first reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible the study could lead to a new body composition standard in the Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTaking care of Marines is always a leadership priority,\u201d Maj. Lindsey Slyman, the programs and assessment section head for the Marine Corps\u2019 policy and standards division said in a statement. \u201cTaking care of Marines means not only vigorously enforcing our high standards, but constantly evolving those standards for a more healthy, fit, and ready force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/02\/26\/after-covid-19-delay-marine-corps-adds-more-athletic-trainers-force-fitness-instructors\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/FFI-instructor-school.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">After COVID-19 delay, Marine Corps adds more athletic trainers, force fitness instructors<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Corps now expects to fully fill both positions across the force by late 2023.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volunteers ideally will come from Marines of all genders and ages and even include postpartum Marines, Karl Friedl, senior research scientist for physiology at the Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study will compare whole body scans, body fat percentage and body shape to the physical fitness test and combat fitness test scores of Marines to come to a more scientific body composition standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data suggests Marines are healthier and fitter than ever before, Friedl said, with more lean body mass and greater bone density. But the Defense Department standards put more emphasis on being thin than on being fit, Military.com reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps will use a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry to measure tissues fat, lean muscle and bone density, along with a \u201cstate-of-the-art,\u201d 3D full body scanner to get a near complete understanding of the body composition for the Marines involved in the study, Friedl said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volunteers are asked to bring their basic training records, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/12\/04\/marine-corps-cancels-cft-for-calendar-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">PFT <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/12\/04\/marine-corps-cancels-cft-for-calendar-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">CFT scores, <\/a>to the study in order to have an understanding of the Marine\u2019s fitness level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officers attending the Basic School at Quantico, Virginia, started volunteering for the test in March, with a focus on candidate\u2019s body composition and performance at the beginning and end of the six-month training cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four cycles of TBS students are expected to be tested, with their study completed around June 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The study on Marines in the National Capital Region is expected to be completed by March
