{"id":43561,"date":"2019-10-21T18:08:11","date_gmt":"2019-10-21T18:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/10\/21\/explorers-find-second-midway-flattop\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:06:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:06:44","slug":"explorers-find-second-midway-flattop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/10\/21\/explorers-find-second-midway-flattop\/","title":{"rendered":"Explorers find second Midway flattop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MIDWAY ATOLL, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (AP) \u2014 A crew of deep-sea explorers and historians <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/10\/19\/deep-sea-explorers-find-japanese-ship-that-sank-during-wwii\/\" target=\"_blank\">looking for lost World War II warships<\/a> have found a second Japanese aircraft carrier that went down in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/06\/05\/miracle-at-midway\/\" target=\"_blank\">the historic Battle of Midway<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vulcan Inc.&#8217;s director of undersea operations Rob Kraft and U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command historian Frank Thompson reviewed high frequency sonar images of the warship Sunday and say that its dimensions and location mean it has to be the carrier Akagi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Akagi was found in the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.papahanaumokuakea.gov\/\" target=_blank> Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument <\/a>resting in nearly 18,000 feet (5,490 meters) of water more than 1,300 miles (2,090 kilometers) northwest of Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/10\/19\/deep-sea-explorers-find-japanese-ship-that-sank-during-wwii\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MIDMAIN2.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Deep-sea explorers find Japanese ship that sank during WWII<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Hundreds of miles off Midway Atoll, nearly halfway between the United States and Japan, a research vessel is launching underwater robots miles into the abyss to look for warships from the famed Battle of Midway.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The researchers used an autonomous underwater vehicle, or AUV, equipped with sonar to find the ship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vehicle had been out overnight collecting data, and the image of a warship appeared in the first set of readings Sunday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first scan used low-resolution sonar, so the crew sent their AUV back to get higher-quality images.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I&#8217;m sure of what we&#8217;re seeing here, the dimensions that we&#8217;re able to derive from this image (are) conclusive,&#8221; Kraft said. &#8220;It can be none other than Akagi.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vessel is sitting among a pile of debris and the ground around the warship is clearly disturbed by the impact of it hitting the seafloor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;She&#8217;s sitting upright on her keel, we can see the bow, we can see the stern clearly, you can see some of the gun emplacements on there, you can see that some of the flight deck is also torn up and missing so you can actually look right into where the flight deck would be,&#8221; (Caleb Jones\/AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The find comes on the heels of the discovery of another Japanese carrier, the Kaga, last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe read about the battles, we know what happened. But when you see these wrecks on the bottom of the ocean and everything, you kind of get a feel for what the real price is for war,\u201d said Frank Thompson, a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command in Washington, D.C., who is o nboard the Petrel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou see the damage these things took, and it\u2019s humbling to watch some of the video of these vessels because they\u2019re war graves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until now, only one of the seven ships that went down in the June 1942 air and sea battle \u2014 five Japanese vessels and two American \u2014 had been located.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crew of the research vessel Petrel is hoping to find and survey all lost ships from the 1942<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2019\/06\/04\/sea-of-white-ceremony-honors-those-who-fought-at-midway\/\" target=_blank> Battle of Midway<\/a>, which historians consider a pivotal victory for the U.S. in the Pacific during WWII.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The battle was fought between American and Japanese aircraft carriers and warplanes about 200 miles (320 kilometers) off Midway Atoll, a former military installation that the Japanese hoped to capture in a surprise attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S., however, intercepted Japanese communications about the strike and were waiting when they arrived. For years, the crew of the 250-foot (76-meter) Petrel has worked with the U.S. Navy and other officials around the world to locate and document sunken ships. It has found more than 30 vessels so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kraft says the crew&#8217;s mission started with Allen&#8217;s desire to honor his father&#8217;s military service. Allen died last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt really extends beyond that at this time,\u201d Kraft said. \u201cWe\u2019re honoring today\u2019s service members, it\u2019s
