{"id":43728,"date":"2020-02-09T20:37:41","date_gmt":"2020-02-09T20:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/02\/09\/navy-identifies-dead-midshipman-who-collapsed-during-prt-run\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:04:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:04:31","slug":"navy-identifies-dead-midshipman-who-collapsed-during-prt-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/02\/09\/navy-identifies-dead-midshipman-who-collapsed-during-prt-run\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy identifies midshipman who collapsed during PRT run and died"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials have identified the midshipman<a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/02\/08\/naval-academy-midshipmen-dies-during-prt\/\" target=\"_blank\"> who died following the U.S. Naval Academy\u2019s semi-annual Physical Readiness Test<\/a> on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Midshipman 3rd Class Duke Carrillo, 21, of Flower Mound, Texas, collapsed during the 1 \u00bd-mile run portion of the PRT, according to a prepared statement emailed to Navy Times on Sunday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although initial responders provided what officials called \u201cexhaustive resuscitation efforts,\u201d he was pronounced dead at 12:23 p.m. Saturday after being rushed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aahs.org\/\" target=_blank>Anne Arundel Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The circumstances surrounding his death of the Quantitative Economics major remain under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;My wife, Joanne, and I join the Brigade, staff and faculty in mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Midshipman Duke Carrillo,\u201d said Vice Adm. Sean Buck, the Naval Academy\u2019s 63rd superintendent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur most heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to the entire Carrillo family, and our extended Naval Academy family, during this extremely difficult time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a year at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usna.edu\/NAPS\/index.php\" target=_blank>Naval Academy Preparatory School <\/a>in Newport, Rhode Island, Carrillo and his twin brother Dylan reported for the Class of 2022\u2032s Induction Day on June 28, 2018, according to the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their younger brother, Jake, is a plebe in the Class of 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3024\" height=\"4032\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MDD2B.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MDD2B.jpg.jpg 3024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MDD2B.jpg.jpg?resize=225,300 225w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MDD2B.jpg.jpg?resize=768,1024 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MDD2B.jpg.jpg?resize=1152,1536 1152w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/MDD2B.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,2048 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3024px) 100vw, 3024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Carrillo brothers.  (Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A member of the 24th Company and the Naval Academy\u2019s Flight Training Squadron, VT-NA, Duke Carrillo earned a 4.0 grade point average last semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuke was an active member of 24th company; he was able to have a special and close relationship with each of his classmates and company mates,\u201d said 24th Company Officer Lt. Sara Lewis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am honestly able to say he was friends with everyone and uplifted those around him. Due to his calm and loving personality, he will be especially missed in 24th company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He dreamed of becoming a naval aviator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Midshipman 3rd Class Duke Carrillo is survived by his parents, Gerald and Jennifer, and his brothers Dylan and
