Anneliese Satz just made a name for herself June 27 at the Marine air station at Beaufort, South Carolina, for being the first female Marine to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/congress\/2019\/04\/01\/99-house-lawmakers-urge-more-f-35s\/\" target=_blank>F-35B <\/a>syllabus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a historic feat for the Corps, as she joins a relatively small field of Marine F-35 pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps\u2019 high-tech stealth fighter pilots were only manned with 86 pilots as of February, according to data obtained through a government records request. The field is authorized to have 263 pilots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Satz arrived at Beaufort, South Carolina, with Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501 in July 2018 and took her first flight in the F-35 in October, according to a Marine Corps release.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/08\/07\/first-female-marine-f-35b-pilot-set-to-graduate-soon-while-first-female-marine-is-selected-to-fly-f-35c\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/30916573288_4f7f24c232_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">First female Marine F-35B pilot graduates training, while first female Marine is selected to fly F-35C<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">1st Lt. Catherine Stark is now the first female Marine to be selected to train and fly the F-35C.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first flight in an F-35 is by yourself,\u201d she said in the command release. \u201cThe syllabus thoroughly prepares you for that first time you take off and for every flight after that, it\u2019s an exhilarating experience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She\u2019s not new to flying, though: She earned her commercial pilot license flying a Robinson R44 Helicopter before becoming a Marine, according to a release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past four years the 29-year-old has completed much military flight training to include aviation pre-flight indoctrination in Pensacola, Florida, primary flight training in Corpus Christi, Texas, and T-45C Goshawk training in Meridian, Mississippi, the release detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following that training she was assigned to VMFAT-501 to train on the F-35B.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAt each of my training schools I did my best,\u201d Satz, said in a command release. \u201cI truly believe that showing up prepared and working diligently are two major keys to success.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5607\" height=\"3738\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F35B-FEMALE.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49666\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F35B-FEMALE.jpg.jpg 5607w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F35B-FEMALE.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F35B-FEMALE.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F35B-FEMALE.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F35B-FEMALE.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/F35B-FEMALE.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5607px) 100vw, 5607px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Capt. Ashley Phillips\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following completion of her F-35 syllabus in June she went to survival, evasion, resistance and escape school and had a patching ceremony Aug. 2, Satz told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Satz is now headed to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 121, the Green Knights based out of Iwakuni, Japan, a release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m very grateful for the instructors, the maintainers, and countless others at 501 who lent me their expertise and time while I was going through the syllabus,\u201d Satz said in the command release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another female Marine, 1st Lt. Catherine Stark, is also making strides within the Corps\u2019 F-35 community. After completing flight training in August aboard Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas, she became the first female Marine to be selected to train and fly the F-35C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stark\u2019s next step is to kick off nine to 12 months of F-35C training at the Navy\u2019s F-35C Fleet Replacement Squadron in Lemoore, California, according to Capt. Christopher Harrison, a Marine spokesman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While these two women are making history within the Corps\u2019 F-35 community, they are not the first women to fly the F-35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, then-Air Force Lt. Col. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2015\/05\/06\/first-female-f-35-pilot-completes-initial-flight\/\" target=_blank>Christine Mau <\/a>became the first female F-35 pilot, and in December 2018, Air Force Maj. Rachael Winiecki became the first female test pilot to fly an F-35, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/01\/11\/meet-the-first-female-test-pilot-to-fly-the-f-35\/\" target=_blank>Air Force Times<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps is procuring both the C and B variants of the F-35. The F-35B is able to launch by vertical take off and can operate from the Navy\u2019s amphibious assault ships. The F-35C is the aircraft carrier variant of the high-tech stealth fighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps plans to procure 353 F-35Bs and 67 F35Cs, according to the Marine Corps\u2019 2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aviation.marines.mil\/Portals\/11\/2019%20AvPlan.pdf\" target=_blank>aviation plan<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marine Capt.
