{"id":44273,"date":"2022-05-11T19:57:27","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T19:57:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/05\/11\/these-marine-generated-tech-ideas-are-becoming-prototypes-for-actual-field-use\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:41:44","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:41:44","slug":"these-marine-generated-tech-ideas-are-becoming-prototypes-for-actual-field-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/home\/left-column\/2022\/05\/11\/these-marine-generated-tech-ideas-are-becoming-prototypes-for-actual-field-use\/","title":{"rendered":"These Marine-generated tech ideas are becoming prototypes for actual field use"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 Marines across the force are feeding \u201cfix it\u201d ideas to a Navy research office, which has produced items such as field-ready <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/414658\/making-hydrogen-fuel-anywhere-onr-tests-prototype-power-marines-expeditionary-environments\" target=\"_blank\">hydrogen fuel<\/a> production and a \u201cchatbot\u201d that can filter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/04\/24\/the-marines-are-looking-to-make-the-light-armored-vehicles-replacement-the-f-35-of-the-ground-combat-force\/\" target=\"_blank\">relevant <\/a>items in digital reams of chat data for information operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Office of Naval Research shared these prototypes and others, generated from ideas sent directly from Marines in operating units on Tuesday at the 2022 Modern Day Marine exposition in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The program is known as<a href=\"https:\/\/www.onr.navy.mil\/techsolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\"> TechSolutions.<\/a> It can be accessed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.onr.navy.mil\/techsolutions\/\" target=\"_blank\">here <\/a>by any Marine with a well-considered problem in need of solving for the unit-level need, said ONR\u2019s Command Master Chief Andrew Chupashko.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The staff aims to have a prototype back to the Marine and their unit within a year of taking on the request, Chupashko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re not waiting five, ten years for that product to get out to them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2017\/11\/15\/instant-replay-and-video-game-warfighting-help-squad-leaders-virtually-prepare-for-battle\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/TDK-photo.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">\u2018Video game warfighting&#8217; helps squad leaders virtually prepare Marines for battle<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Tactical Decision Kits make realistic gaming part of warfighting at the lowest levels.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proliferation of hydrogen fuel cell-powered devices, such as drones, power generators and unmanned ground vehicles and watercraft have Marines in the field looking for better ways to get fuel where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of airdropping in batteries or hauling loads of fuel via vulnerable vehicle convoys, Marines asked ONR to find a way to combine simple materials in a portable device to make their own fuel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The result: hydrogen tactical refueling point, or H-TaRP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With simple ingredients such as aluminum pellets and water, Marines can mix it up and have fuel at the ready, Chupashko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, they still have to deliver the aluminum pellets, right? Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While those are available, the H-TaRP kit also allows Marines to make their own pellets from scrap aluminum from what they find around them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hello aluminum scavenging working party detail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Researchers with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology teamed with ONR on the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cH-TaRP\u2019s purpose is to eliminate the need for diesel fuel transport and battery charging by being able to use locally available resources to produce hydrogen fuel for all sorts of vehicles,\u201d Erik Limpacher, leader of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shephardmedia.com\/news\/landwarfareintl\/mit-demonstrates-portable-hydrogen-fuel-generator\/\" target=\"_blank\">Energy Systems Group at MIT Lincoln Laboratory<\/a>, said in a Navy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/image\/6848614\/ii-mef-receives-h-tarp-brief-and-demonstration\" target=\"_blank\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This particular initiative ties in with work recent Force Design 2030 efforts have aimed to resolve. Cheyenne Stillion\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FARPs provide a mobile platform for Marines to refuel and rearm across vast distances stretched far from standard logistical hubs or supply lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the recently released 2022 Marine Corps aviation plan, authors noted the importance of having these refueling options at various levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They noted that future battle refueling and rearming will \u201crequire departure from current-day munitions positing practices and demand a far more agile and responsive supply chain, able to reliably source and transport key munitions to the right location at the right time to support dynamic operational requirements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The H-TaRP gives a similar capability in a much smaller package.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deployed at the company level, Marines can carry the whole kit with two people, it fits in existing Pelican and gun cases and can fill a tank in about 30 minutes, with minimal training, according to materials provided by ONR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine chatbot came about because Marines needed a way to parse the flood of data from chat features they scour for information operations. Information Marines were sitting around on \u201cchat watch\u201d duty instead of actually analyzing the information using their mission-specific training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnybody who has sat in a chat room knows you have an exorbitant amount of information that comes at you,\u201d Chupashko said. \u201cAnd you\u2019re going to sit there and try to decipher these things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ONR put together specific computer processors with customized software rules to built an automated alert system so that withstanders could get the relevant information they needed at the right time, Chupashko said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need a system that can extract the information that we actually need, raise our attention to the information we actually need to be made aware of in time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other tools include small unit planning applications, air traffic control simulators, field masks created in the field using 3D printers. An inflatable, temporary pier for amphibious operations, and an energy training exercise game, to help Marines better plan operational energy usage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The
