{"id":44371,"date":"2022-03-23T21:20:44","date_gmt":"2022-03-23T21:20:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/03\/23\/black-socks-nail-polish-officially-approved-for-marines-in-cammies\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:43:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:43:48","slug":"black-socks-nail-polish-officially-approved-for-marines-in-cammies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/breaking-news\/2022\/03\/23\/black-socks-nail-polish-officially-approved-for-marines-in-cammies\/","title":{"rendered":"Black socks, ombr\u00e9 nail polish officially approved for Marines in cammies"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A recent Marine Corps uniform board has approved black socks and ombr\u00e9 nail polish in the combat utility uniform, slightly longer hair for all Marines and special characters on nametapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Updated maternity uniforms are now rolling out for pregnant Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Marine Corps remains the only service branch to not allow ponytails for women in uniforms other than the physical training uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The changes, made official Wednesday in an all-Marine message, were made in an effort to \u201cpositively impact diversity, equity, and inclusion,\u201d said 1st Lt. Phillip Parker, a spokesman for Marine Corps Training and Education Command.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/11\/04\/heres-where-ponytails-stand-for-women-in-the-marine-corps\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"289\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/650716.jpg.jpg?w=289\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Here\u2019s where ponytails stand for women in the Marine Corps<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">It&#039;s been a hotly debated topic within the Corps, the commandant said.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Uniform changes<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines who have apostrophes, accent marks, tildes or hyphens in their last names finally will get to display them on their name tapes, according to the MARADMIN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But despite the change, the font and size of the nametape will remain the same, so Marines with long or duel last names may still have issues fitting their entire name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines also will be authorized to grow the \u201cbulk of their hair,\u201d up to three inches. The bulk of the hair is defined as how far away from the scalp the hair is when it lays flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, Marines were allowed to have hair as long as three inches, but the hair could be no longer than two inches while laying flat. The new rule allows Marines to have their hair be three inches thick while laying flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to allowing thicker hair, the Marine Corps will allow men to edge up their hairlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2018Edging up\u2019 undesirable hair that extends beyond or below the natural hairline is authorized (e.g., remove a \u2018widow\u2019s peak,\u2019 or remove excessive hair on forehead so it provides a neat line), as long as it provides a neat, professional, and natural appearance,\u201d the MARADMIN reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps also allow Marines to wear helmet caps in certain circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c(Commercial) black, olive drab, MARPAT and coyote helmet caps (also known as helmet caps or helmet liners) may be worn underneath the helmet and may be worn as an outer garment for short periods when the helmet is removed, per the Commander\u2019s discretion,\u201d the MARADMIN reads. \u201cThe helmet cap will not be worn in lieu of the MCCUU caps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For women the Corps is now allowing more nail polish options while in uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though it was allowed under the previous order, the new regulation emphasizes that \u201cnude fingernail polish that resembles the wearer\u2019s skin tone and covers the whole nail,\u201d is authorized to wear in the utility uniform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the nude and natural colored nail polishes women were allowed to wear in their utilities, ombre style nail polish is now allowed according to the MARADMIN.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nail polish worn by women in the service or the dress blue uniform are still required to be a shade of red and must \u201ccomplement the skin tone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/05\/06\/marines-may-take-up-to-five-months-of-leave-after-giving-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\">pregnant Marines<\/a>, the Corps is unrolling some updates to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/10\/new-marine-corps-maternity-uniforms-available-in-april\/\" target=\"_blank\">maternity uniform.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps is adopting a better fitting version of the maternity uniform that uses side tabs with the current service uniform maternity tunic and maternity khaki shirt. Additionally, a nursing undershirt that eases access for pumping and nursing is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese updates have been included in this MARADMIN as a supplemental announcement to the force, though they have been available for purchase since March and April of 2021 in Marine Corps Exchanges,\u201d Headquarters Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Sam Stephenson said in a Feb. 22 email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps \u201ctentatively\u201d expects a maternal dress blue skirt, dress blue slacks and physical training shorts to be available sometime in fiscal year 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Black socks, still no ponytails<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Black socks long have been worn by Marines who believed low boot blouses would hide the uniform violation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But, with the Wednesday MARADMIN, yesterday\u2019s rebels are now well within right to wear black, coyote brown or olive drab socks in utility uniforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines assigned to the Tactical Training Exercise Control Group stationed at Marine Corps Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, California, will be given two sets of woodland utility uniforms and one pair of hot weather combat boots with the enlisted uniform allowance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOfficers are not eligible for supplemental allowances,\u201d the MARADMIN said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the changes, the Corps remains the only service to ban ponytails in non-physical-training uniforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2018, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2014\/12\/09\/navy-expands-female-hair-regs-includes-two-strand-braids\/\">Navy<\/a> has allowed women in its ranks to sport ponytails and other hairstyles, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/2021\/05\/06\/army-to-allow-ponytails-braids-for-women\/\">Army,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/06\/11\/curlier-thicker-ponytails-and-braids-to-be-allowed-under-latest-air-force-grooming-regs\/\">Air Force<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2021\/01\/21\/air-force-to-ok-braids-ponytails-for-women-but-no-beards-for-men\/\">Space Force<\/a> and Coast Guard all changed hair policies for women in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Corps may change its stance on ponytails soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Commandant of the Marine Corps, along with senior leadership, are still considering proposals for adjustments to the female hair policy and a decision will be announced via a separate MARADMIN at a later date,\u201d Capt.
