{"id":44536,"date":"2020-03-16T23:21:44","date_gmt":"2020-03-16T23:21:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/03\/16\/operational-pause-lifted-for-north-carolina-marines\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:39:41","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:39:41","slug":"operational-pause-lifted-for-north-carolina-marines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2020\/03\/16\/operational-pause-lifted-for-north-carolina-marines\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Operational pause\u2019 lifted for North Carolina Marines"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201coperational pause\u201d conducted by Marine Corps Installations East to get a handle on what was needed to prevent the spread of coronavirus has been lifted, a Marine official announced Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Tuesday, the unit in charge of the Marine facilities on bases in Virginia, North and South Carolinas and Georgia, will resume limited operations, Nat Fahy, a spokesman for Marine Corps Installations East, told Marine Corps Times in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are balancing the need to support II Marine Expeditionary Force\u2019s daily operations and mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus,\u201d Fahy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo mitigate the spread of the virus, fitness centers remain closed, meetings\/events with large group gatherings have been cancelled or rescheduled with curtailed list of attendees,\u201d Fahy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMission critical\u201d facilities including, all medical facilities, chow halls, commissaries, child development centers and security and emergency services will remain open and properly staffed, Fahy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The virus has caused mass cancellations of public events in both the military and civilian world as people start to practice social distancing as a technique to slow down the spread of the potentially deadly disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Marine Corps for its part has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/03\/16\/graduations-at-marine-corps-boot-camp-closed-to-public-in-wake-of-virus-outbreak\/\" target=_blank>stopped public boot camp graduations<\/a> and canceled the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/03\/12\/yuma-cancels-airshow-in-wake-of-coronavirus-spread\/\" target=_blank>Yuma Air Sho<\/a>w, along with large mutlinational operations like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2020\/03\/16\/soldiers-in-europe-for-defender-2020-to-return-home-amid-pandemic\/\" target=_blank>African Lion<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/03\/11\/major-arctic-exercise-canceled-over-coronavirus-fears\/\" target=_blank>Cold Response. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Defense has even implemented <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/03\/14\/dod-bans-all-domestic-travel-for-troops-employees-in-response-to-coronavirus-threat\/\" target=_blank>strict restriction on all travel<\/a> performed by military personnel and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So far at least three Marines have tested positive for the virus \u2015 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/03\/08\/sailor-in-italy-marine-in-virginia-test-positive-for-coronavirus\/\">one in Virginia<\/a> and one at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/03\/12\/california-marine-in-miramar-tests-positive-for-coronavirus\/?utm_expid=.jgR4d0ScQXGLeAfPbvE8OA.0&#038;utm_referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.militarytimes.com%2Fnews%2Fcoronavirus%2F\">Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California<\/a>, and a third is under observation in Camp Pendleton, California. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/2020\/03\/12\/first-person-on-lejeune-has-tested-positive-for-coronavirus\/\">Marine dependent has tested positive <\/a>for the disease aboard
