Noah M. Ballow on March 12, 2020, at a ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, for his heroic actions and quick decision making while on vacation with his family on July 7, 2018 at Paradise Village Resort in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, a Marine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dvidshub.net\/news\/365218\/valor-beyond-line-duty\" target=\"_blank\">news release<\/a> detailed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While spending time with his family at the resort, Ballow noticed an an exhausted elderly man fighting against a dangerous rip current that was pulling him out to sea. Ballow made the quick decision to act and swam to the man to calm and help him back to shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI knew he needed help, and I just went,\u201d Ballow, an intelligence specialist with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron 3 at MCAS Miramar, said in the release. \u201cIf someone needs help and you\u2019re there and you can help them, then do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the release:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDespite the dire situation, the Marine remained calm and kept himself and the man afloat by treading water for several minutes.&#8221; Ballow \u201cthen began to swim parallel to the shoreline \u2013 with the man in tow \u2013 until they eventually arrived at the water\u2019s edge.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/01\/29\/four-marines-receive-rare-medal-for-rescuing-drowning-mother-daughters-in-north-carolina-on-fathers-day-2018\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6051507.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Four Marines receive rare medal for rescuing drowning mother, daughters in North Carolina on Father\u2019s Day 2018<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Unfortunately, the girls\u2019 father, Charles \u201cAustin\u201d Joy Jr., was unresponsive when the Marines reached him.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ballow and his father eventually pulled the tired man to shore, according to the release. Ballow said he wasn\u2019t scared when he rushed into dangerous waters to rescue the drowning man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, I didn\u2019t think about that, I just went,&#8221; Ballow said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Navy and Marine Corps Medal was presented to Ballow by Maj. Gen. Kevin M. Iiams, commanding general of 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou can tell the quality of an individual in the final seconds of a definitive decision,\u201d Iiams said at the ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/09\/10\/marine-intelligence-officer-awarded-medal-for-rescuing-unconscious-man-from-burning-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy and Marine Corps Medal<\/a> is a relatively rare award often presented to service members who put themselves at great risk to rescue others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medal
