{"id":44620,"date":"2018-05-29T16:21:47","date_gmt":"2018-05-29T16:21:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/05\/29\/a-26th-meu-incident-in-italy-under-investigation\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:40:31","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:40:31","slug":"a-26th-meu-incident-in-italy-under-investigation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2018\/05\/29\/a-26th-meu-incident-in-italy-under-investigation\/","title":{"rendered":"26th MEU incident in Italy under investigation"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An incident involving Marines embarked with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/05\/21\/marine-battalion-commander-sacked\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">26th Marine Expeditionary Unit<\/a>, or MEU, in Italy is currently under investigation, according to Corps officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Corps provided few details of the incident, but Marines aboard the San Antonio-class <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/04\/13\/thousands-of-us-troops-and-marines-arrive-in-jordan\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">amphibious transport dock New York<\/a> recently ported in Gaeta, Italy, on April 21 for a regularly scheduled port visit and left the area on April 25. The ship is part of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group with the 26th MEU. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRegarding an incident involving alleged misconduct of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/04\/05\/us-military-air-operations-suspended-in-djibouti-training-exercise-canceled-amid-marine-mishaps\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">26th MEU Marines<\/a> in Gaeta, Italy, I cannot comment on the ongoing investigation,\u201d Capt. Natalie Poggemeyer, a spokeswoman for the 26th MEU, told Marine Corps Times in an email. \u201cThe U.S. Navy and Marine Corps take all cases of misconduct very seriously and NCIS [Naval Criminal Investigative Service] is working with local law enforcement officials to investigate the alleged incidents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s been a busy and bumpy deployment for the 26th MEU. On May 19, Lt. Col. Marcus J. Alabiso II\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Corps officials have provided few details surrounding the abrupt firing, and it is unclear if the incident in Italy is connected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a press release sent in late May the Corps said the commander was fired \u201cdue to a loss of trust and confidence in his ability to continue to lead the battalion.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firing was the latest in a string of incidents to plague the 26th MEU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In early April, the 26th MEU suffered two air mishaps while conducting exercises in Djibouti as part of exercise Alligator Dagger. An AV-8B Harrier crashed shortly after takeoff and the pilot ejected, and separately a CH-53E Super Stallion suffered structural damage while landing at Arta Beach, Djibouti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pilots in both incidents were ok. The remainder of Alligator Dagger was canceled, and U.S. Naval Forces Central Command temporarily halted flight operations in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MEU recently took part in an annual exercise in Jordan dubbed Eager Lion.
