Jackie Wren wrote in an email response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 09L program was established in 2003 to provide Arabic, Dari and Pashto <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/04\/07\/this-real-life-marine-and-interpreter-who-saved-his-life-give-thumbs-up-to-united-states-of-al\/\" target=\"_blank\">native and heritage speakers<\/a> to support Army operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, Wren said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army plans to retain soldiers holding the Military Occupational Specialty coded 09L through reclassification if qualified, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/07\/23\/after-delays-this-former-iraqi-translator-turned-us-soldier-will-be-a-us-citizen\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18200611108129.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">After delays, this former Iraqi translator turned soldier will be a US citizen<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">More than a year after a former interpreter for U.S. military forces in Iraq was pulled out of a U.S. citizenship ceremony without explanation, he\u2019s about to be naturalized.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, 177 soldiers hold the 09L MOS which will be deleted by May 1, 2022. Soldiers with this MOS have until May 2023 to reclassify into a new MOS, Wren told Army Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThough the Army is eliminating this MOS, positions within Military Intelligence or Special Operation Forces may be available to these soldiers based on their aptitude and in accordance with security requirements,\u201d Wren said. \u201cLeaders are informing these soldiers of this change, and the soldiers are being provided with career counseling and educational support to assist in the transition to new career fields that allow them to continue their service with the Army.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army holds a number of language-related jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One is a skilled linguist, which falls under the intelligence 35 MOS series and uses soldiers trained in the target language for both strategic and tactical positions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, the linguist translates classified documents and other materials but can communicate directly with foreign-language speakers in a military capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also voice interceptor roles in which a trained linguist listens to audio traffic to decipher what\u2019s being said for intelligence gathering purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1870\" height=\"1132\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Linguist-senior-leader.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Linguist-senior-leader.jpg.jpg 1870w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Linguist-senior-leader.jpg.jpg?resize=300,182 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Linguist-senior-leader.jpg.jpg?resize=768,465 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Linguist-senior-leader.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,620 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Linguist-senior-leader.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,930 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1870px) 100vw, 1870px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A military linguist attached to the 2nd Security Force Assistance Brigade (left) provides interpreter assistance during a key leader engagement at the Joint Readiness Training Center. They also assist soldiers with familiarization training in a foreign language and cultural awareness, according to the Army\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goarmy.com\/linguist\/language-programs.html\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers in the 09L program also assist at security checkpoints, provide interpretation services for Army public affairs offices and assist military contracting officers with purchase transactions, among other duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Language Institute, the center of language training for all of the armed services, offers instruction in 13 languages and regional variations of Arabic for 35-series linguists. It currently offers training also in Pashto, but not Dari, according to its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Training ranges from as short as a 36-week course in French to a 64-week course in Arabic. There is no current plan to grow the 35-series MOS linguists, Wren said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Army\u2019s language support is largely contracted. Uniformed language support, while small, provides an important capability with security clearance-holding linguists and linguists who can deploy to support contingency operations,\u201d Wren said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Times asked if the ground service was moving to add speakers of peer- and near-peer adversary languages such as Russian, Chinese or Persian Farsi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Army\u2019s G2 regularly reviews language requirements within existing structure across the Army and adjusts the requirements as needed for 35-series linguists,\u201d Wren said. \u201cThere are no additional language skill authorizations as a result of these unit
