Bryan Cooper Mount, 25, from St. George, Utah, was identified Thursday as the fallen paratrooper by his home unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mount was assigned to 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 82nd\u2019s commander, Maj. Gen. Christopher Donahue, said in a Thursday statement that Mount \u201cwas a true American hero\u201d who served honorably and gave his life defending his fellow citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCooper was a three time volunteer on his second combat deployment and his loss will be deeply felt across our entire formation,\u201d Donahue said. \u201cHe was a husband, son, brother and leader who was adored by everyone who knew him. Our sole focus now is providing unyielding support to Cooper\u2019s family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Videos regularly emerge depicting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/02\/20\/centcom-reviewing-road-clash-incident-between-us-and-russian-forces-in-syria\/\" target=_blank>U.S. and Russian forces<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MHJournalist\/status\/1273617088859561984\" target=_blank>jockeying<\/a> over <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mo_Herdem\/status\/1230218147938082818\" target=_blank>roadways<\/a> in Syria, but there\u2019s no indication that Mount\u2019s death resulted from such an incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Operation Inherent Resolve deputy commander Air Force Maj. Gen. Kennedy P. Ekman said Wednesday that there haven\u2019t been any \u201csignificant interactions\u201d between U.S. and Russian personnel, even though \u201ccontact is actually very frequent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have no indications that any Russian activity existed at the location of the unfortunate loss, and then the rest we\u2019re going to have to leave to the investigation,\u201d Ekman told reporters concerning Mount\u2019s death. \u201cThe Russians and coalition forces are out in some of the same spaces every day. Just as we conduct patrols, they conduct patrols.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inherent Resolve is the U.S. military\u2019s named mission to defeat the Islamic State, which lost the final bits of its physical territory in March 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ekman framed ISIS remnants as a \u201clow-level insurgency\u201d hiding in \u201ccaves and mountains\u201d during a press briefing on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere Daesh is, they struggle just to find sanctuary in rural locations,\u201d Ekman said, using an Arabic acronym for ISIS. \u201cTheir leadership, their finances, their media are just shadows of what they used to be.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There have been four hostile deaths and five non-combat deaths under the Inherent Resolve mission this year. All of the combat deaths have been in Iraq.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2020\/03\/13\/soldier-airman-identified-as-us-troops-killed-in-rocket-attack-on-iraq-base\/\">airman and a soldier were killed<\/a> in mid-March during a rocket attack on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2020\/03\/13\/iraq-army-says-us-strikes-kill-5-security-forces-1-civilian\/\">Camp Taji<\/a>. Prior to that, two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/03\/10\/these-are-the-two-marine-raiders-killed-in-iraq-while-clearing-a-tunnel-of-isis-fighters\/\">Marine Raiders<\/a> were killed in Iraq\u2019s southern Makhmur Mountains while clearing a tunnel complex full of Islamic State fighters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly 150 U.S. service members have been wounded in action this year, as well. One Marine, 10 airmen and 138 soldiers have been wounded in combat in 2020, according to Pentagon data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of the wounded in action this year appear to be from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2020\/04\/21\/american-troops-had-only-hours-to-react-to-iranian-ballistic-missile-attack-heres-what-they-did\/\">Iranian ballistic missile attack<\/a> that struck two Iraqi bases housing coalition troops on Jan. 8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2019, there were three hostile deaths, nine non-combat deaths and only 12 troops wounded in action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are roughly 5,200 U.S. troops in Iraq, according to Ekman\u2019s Wednesday briefing. He declined to discuss the number of troops in Syria, citing operational security concerns surrounding their limited footprint there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sgt.
