{"id":48720,"date":"2022-02-04T17:26:27","date_gmt":"2022-02-04T17:26:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/02\/04\/half-a-million-veterans-re-entered-the-workforce-in-january\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:37:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:37:28","slug":"half-a-million-veterans-re-entered-the-workforce-in-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/02\/04\/half-a-million-veterans-re-entered-the-workforce-in-january\/","title":{"rendered":"Half a million veterans re-entered the workforce in January"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2022\/01\/07\/veterans-unemployment-drops-to-lowest-level-in-two-years\/\" target=\"_blank\">veterans unemployment rate<\/a> rose in January, but so did the number of veterans who found jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rush of veterans re-entering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2022\/02\/02\/400m-va-program-to-help-covid-unemployed-vets-has-produced-few-new-jobs\/\" target=\"_blank\">the job market<\/a> last month reflected a nationwide trend towards higher levels of working-age Americans participating in the workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The unemployment rate for all veterans rose from 3.2 percent in December to 3.8 percent in January, but the number of veterans who had full-time employment rose by more than 430,000 individuals, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of veterans unable to find steady work rose by about 70,000 individuals from December to January. Overall, about 8.9 million veterans sought full-time jobs in January, up more than 500,000 individuals from the last month of 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/02\/02\/400m-va-program-to-help-covid-unemployed-vets-has-produced-few-new-jobs\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21142425631365.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">$400M VA program to help COVID-unemployed vets has produced few new jobs<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">VA&#039;s rapid retraining program has helped just a small fraction of the veterans that officials expected.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of that was driven by veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars era. About 200,000 more young veterans reported looking for work last month than in December, pushing the group\u2019s labor participation rate to nearly 80 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the nation, the unemployment rate for all workers rose from 3.9 percent to 4.0 percent, even though the number of unemployed workers stayed roughly the same at 6.5 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administration officials touted BLS findings that the economy added about 467,000 jobs last month even amid the latest nationwide surge in coronavirus cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAmerica\u2019s job machine is going stronger than ever, fueling a strong recovery and opportunity for hardworking women and men all across this great country,\u201d said President Joe Biden during a nationwide address from the White House on Friday. \u201cAmerica is back to work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/01\/07\/veterans-unemployment-drops-to-lowest-level-in-two-years\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21363597268935.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Veterans unemployment drops to lowest level in two years<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 3.2% jobless rate in December was the lowest mark since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans have typically fared better than their civilian peers in the monthly unemployment estimates. January was the 60th time in the last 61 months that the veterans unemployment rate was lower than the national rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, lawmakers in recent years
