{"id":50131,"date":"2020-10-22T19:40:04","date_gmt":"2020-10-22T19:40:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/10\/22\/the-life-that-you-could-have-had-is-forever-gone-marine-sentenced-for-murder-of-his-girlfriends-sex-for-drugs-lover\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:44:57","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:44:57","slug":"the-life-that-you-could-have-had-is-forever-gone-marine-sentenced-for-murder-of-his-girlfriends-sex-for-drugs-lover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/10\/22\/the-life-that-you-could-have-had-is-forever-gone-marine-sentenced-for-murder-of-his-girlfriends-sex-for-drugs-lover\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The life that you could have had is forever gone\u2019: Marine sentenced for murder of his girlfriend\u2019s sex-for-drugs lover"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Corps 1st Lt. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/12\/20\/marine-lieutenant-charged-in-murder-of-man-found-buried-in-joshua-tree-national-park\/\" target=_blank>Curtis Lee Krueger <\/a>was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison for murdering a man who was having sex with his girlfriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krueger was a communications officer with Combat Logistics Battalion 7, based out of Twentynine Palms, California, when the body of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2018\/12\/20\/marine-lieutenant-charged-in-murder-of-man-found-buried-in-joshua-tree-national-park\/\">54-year-old Henry Stange<\/a> was found half buried by the side of the road in Joshua Tree National Park on June 2, 2018, Marine Corps Times previously reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In September the Marine was convicted of assault causing great bodily injury and second-degree murder, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/09\/16\/29-palms-marine-convicted-in-love-triangle-murder\/#:~:text=Curtis%20Lee%20Krueger%20was%20convicted,girlfriend%2C%20according%20to%20court%20documents.&#038;text=Stange%2C%20a%20divorced%20man%20with,Marine%20Corps%20Times%20previously%20reported.\" target=_blank>Marine Corps Times reported. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday he was sentenced to three years in prison for the assault charge and 15 years to life for the murder charge at a sentencing hearing in Riverside, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judge Kelly Hansen ruled that the two charges will run consecutively, meaning that he will first serve his three year sentence for assault before he starts his sentence for murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe life that you could have had is forever gone,\u201d Hansen said to Krueger at Thursday\u2019s sentencing hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ll have many, many years in state prison, I don\u2019t know if you\u2019ll ever get out,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2019\/01\/29\/an-inside-look-into-the-strange-case-possible-love-triangle-of-a-marine-lieutenant-charged-with-murder-of-man-found-in-joshua-tree-national-park\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4385707.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">An inside look into the strange case, possible love triangle of a Marine lieutenant charged with murder of man found in Joshua Tree National Park<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Krueger was arrested a second time on Dec. 13, 2018, and held at the Cois M. Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta on $1 million bail.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krueger was convicted of Stange\u2019s May 24, 2018 murder, which was when he found out Stange was continuing his sex-for-drugs relationship with Ashlie Stapp, the Marine\u2019s girlfriend whom he shared a trailer home with in Twentynine Palms, court records show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>May 24, 2018<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the morning of the murder, Stapp had texted Krueger that she was going to pick up suitcases from her mother\u2019s house in Canyon Lake, California, according to the court records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c&#8217;Suitcases,&#8217; \u2018seriously?\u2019 \u2018if I find out you are doing drugs&#8230;,\u2019\u201d Krueger texted back to Stapp, the court documents said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Stapp stopped texting Krueger he started to track her phone, soon finding it at her mother\u2019s house, according to the documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krueger told officers in his chain of command that he was having family issues and requested permission to leave work early, the court documents reveal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was allowed to leave work and drove 100 miles to Canyon Lake, where he found the house empty except for his fianc\u00e9\u2019s cellphone, according to the court documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After finding the phone Krueger immediately went to Stange\u2019s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce inside the residence, Krueger unleashed a violent attack that left Henry with several sharp force injuries to his chest and neck, and numerous blunt force injuries that fractured and collapsed his skull and left him bleeding on the floor,\u201d court documents said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After Stange was dead, Krueger and Stapp started to clean up the scene. The two eventually bought a shovel at a nearby hardware store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two loaded Stange\u2019s body in the back of Krueger\u2019s truck and transported the body to Joshua Tree National Park and buried him in a shallow grave, the documents said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy actions have brought me great pain,\u201d Krueger said at Thursday\u2019s sentencing hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Krueger claimed he killed Stange not in a jealous rage but in the hopes of \u201csaving\u201d Stapp from the man who fed her drugs and assaulted her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI foolishly took Henry for a rapist and a predator, but the man who died was a father,\u201d Krueger added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stange was divorced with two kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The judge presiding over the hearing rejected that excuse from Krueger, noting that the jury got the conviction, \u201cabsolutely right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMr. Krueger intentionally took the life of another individual with malice aforethought in a brutal fashion,\u201d Hansen said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt wasn\u2019t because he was under the mistaken impression that his girlfriend was the victim of rape.
