{"id":50833,"date":"2019-04-23T15:19:20","date_gmt":"2019-04-23T15:19:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/04\/23\/air-force-authorizes-two-piece-flight-suits-announces-ocp-patch-changes\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T20:53:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T20:53:04","slug":"air-force-authorizes-two-piece-flight-suits-announces-ocp-patch-changes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2019\/04\/23\/air-force-authorizes-two-piece-flight-suits-announces-ocp-patch-changes\/","title":{"rendered":"Air Force authorizes two-piece flight suits and announces OCP patch changes"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force on Tuesday announced that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2019\/04\/04\/ill-fitting-gear-could-put-female-pilots-lives-at-risk-but-a-redesign-is-on-the-way\/\" target=\"_blank\">airmen who wear flight suits<\/a> are authorized to wear a two-piece version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/03\/30\/from-boots-to-flight-suits-the-air-force-is-working-to-improve-gear-for-female-pilots\/\" target=\"_blank\">Flight Duty Uniform<\/a>, both while deployed and in-garrison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also unveiled were new rules on how patches should be worn on the new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/09\/25\/airmen-can-don-the-ocp-uniform-starting-oct-1-heres-whats-allowed\/\" target=\"_blank\">Operational Camouflage Uniform<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new patch configuration will swap the locations of patches on the OCP, so airmen\u2019s squadron patches will be on their right sleeves, along with the U.S. flag, and their higher headquarters patch will be on the left sleeve, according to a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chief of Staff Gen. Dave Goldfein said the change was made to emphasize the role squadrons play in the Air Force\u2019s structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/airforcetimes\/news\/your-air-force\/2018\/05\/14\/the-long-awaited-ocp-uniform-is-on-its-way-to-the-air-force-and-heres-when-you-could-get-it\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Goldfein-OCP.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The long-awaited OCP uniform is on its way to the Air Force \u2014 and here\u2019s when you could get it<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">For years, airmen have dreamed of it, demanded it, and envied those lucky enough to have it already. And finally, the Operational Camouflage Pattern uniform on its way for everybody.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuring the initial rollout of the OCP, we originally matched our sister services regarding patch configurations as we sought to emphasize our role as a joint warfighting force,\u201d Goldfein said. \u201cIn response to overwhelming feedback received from airmen, we will make an easy \u2018sleeve swap\u2019 of the patch configuration to further elevate our focus on honoring the heritage of squadrons as the war-fighting units of the world\u2019s greatest Air Force.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expanded use of the two-piece flight suit, which is officially known as the 2PFDU, is intended to give squadron commanders more uniform options to better fit their mission requirements. The two-piece suit became officially authorized April 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The traditional one-piece flight suit will continue to be an option. Air Force spokeswoman Capt. Carrie Volpe said certain career fields already wear the two-piece suit while deployed, and some special operations airmen have worn it full-time for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Airmen can only wear the coyote brown T-shirt along with the two-piece flight suit, according to a fact sheet on the Air Force Personnel Center\u2019s web site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost a year ago, the Air Force announced it would fully move to the OCP by April 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new
