{"id":51565,"date":"2020-08-18T21:47:06","date_gmt":"2020-08-18T21:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/08\/18\/two-marines-killed-in-hawaii-car-accident\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:41:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:41:14","slug":"two-marines-killed-in-hawaii-car-accident","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/08\/18\/two-marines-killed-in-hawaii-car-accident\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Marines killed in Hawaii car accident"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the early morning hours of Aug. 1, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/08\/17\/jack-loved-being-a-marine-parents-of-private-first-class-killed-in-aav-accident-remember-their-son\/\" target=_blank>three Marines were speedily driving<\/a> along Likelike Highway heading toward Honolulu when the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/08\/17\/jack-loved-being-a-marine-parents-of-private-first-class-killed-in-aav-accident-remember-their-son\/\" target=_blank> driver lost control <\/a>and collided with a rock wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two of the Marines in the car were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/marine-corps-times\/2019\/11\/27\/october-was-the-deadliest-month-in-7-years-for-marines-killed-in-off-duty-vehicle-accidents\/\" target=_blank>pronounced dead on the scene<\/a>, while the driver was sent to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2020\/08\/11\/marine-killed-in-philadelphia-traffic-accident\/\" target=_blank>nearby hospital in critical condition,<\/a> according to a Honolulu Police Department statement on the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSpeed and alcohol both appear to be contributing factors to this collision,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident is currently under investigation and the driver, later released from the hospital, has not been arrested or charged, according to a statement from the Marine Corps. Jordan Cook, 21, from Kitsap, Washington, and Lance Cpl. Gabriel Clark, 20, from Ramsey, Minnesota, were killed in the accident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cook, a supply administration specialist, joined the Corps in August 2019, according to Capt. Eric Abrams, a spokesman for Marine Corps Base Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Cook told his sister that he wanted to enlist in the Corps, her first response wasn\u2019t the most encouraging, she told Marine Corps Times in a phone call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first thing I said to him was you\u2019re fat,\u201d Ashley Carlson said in the phone call. \u201cHe was like the total chubby little kid who played video games all day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Cook was confident that he could put in the work required to earn the title Marine, telling his sister that he \u201ccould fix his body,\u201d easier than she could fix her attitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cook spent a year getting in shape before shipping off to boot camp, going for a run every morning and losing the weight he put on sitting on the couch, Carlson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He transformed \u201cfrom this little kid I had known my whole life to this grown man,\u201d Carlson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cook was part of Headquarters and Service Battalion, Marine Forces Pacific, and was stationed on Camp H. M. Smith in Hawaii, Abrams said in the release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His medals include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Medal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCook was a valuable member of our command, and his tragic loss has impacted our entire Marine Corps family,\u201d Col. Tony Bango, the battalion\u2019s commander, said in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur deepest condolences go out to PFC Jordan Cook\u2019s family, and our thoughts and prayers are with them always, as this young Marine\u2019s spirit and legacy endures,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clark was a 6176 Osprey crew chief assigned to Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 363 located at Marine Corps Air Station Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, Abrams said in the email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He joined the Corps in October of 2018 and his medals include the National Defense Service Medal and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Abrams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLance Cpl. Clark had an infectious positive outlook on everything he did and always made people smile,\u201d Gunnery Sgt. Timothy Sampley, VMM-363\u2032s flightline chief, said of the Marine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe made the tough times easier to handle. He was a great Marine and is sorely missed,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clark\u2019s family did not respond for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This story has been updated to correct the last name of Pfc.
