Duncan Hunter<\/a> had with U.S. military officials during his 10-day trip to Italy in November 2015 was a message from the congressman to local Navy leaders to \u201cgo f*** themselves\u201d after they wouldn\u2019t accommodate a last-minute request for a tour of a base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2018\/08\/21\/duncan-hunter-gop-lawmaker-and-marine-vet-indicted-on-corruption-charges\/\" target=_blank>according to court documents<\/a>, that didn\u2019t stop the California Republican and Marine Corps veteran from charging the full cost of flying his family overseas \u2014 more than $14,000 \u2014 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/03\/24\/justice-department-investigates-rep-duncan-hunter\/\" target=_blank>his re-election campaign<\/a> as a \u201cmostly military\/defense meet related\u201d event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an email to friends, his wife, Margaret, instead referred to the vacation as \u201ctruly our best family trip so far.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, the couple faces a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2018\/08\/22\/what-duncan-hunters-indictment-means-for-defense-issues\/\" target=_blank>federal indictment<\/a> that they racked up more than $250,000 in illegal expenditures over seven years and doctored dozens of campaign records to cover up the crimes, including the Italy trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/congress\/2018\/08\/22\/what-duncan-hunters-indictment-means-for-defense-issues\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-631405342.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">What Duncan Hunter\u2019s indictment means for defense issues<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Hunter has had an impact on a number of pet defense programs during his time in Congress.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The offenses include corruption, conspiracy and numerous military-themed improprieties, among them $3,700 in charges to fly his family to Washington to participate in an annual Marine Corps Marathon event and hundreds of dollars in improper grocery purchases at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In another case, Hunter bought himself a pair of Hawaiian shorts at a golf club but charged it to his campaign, claiming it was \u201c(golf) balls for wounded warriors\u201d for record-keeping purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Hunters disregarded rules implemented by the (campaign staff) to track legitimate expenses \u2026 and when pressed by the treasurer to comply, dismissed the rules as \u2018silly,\u2019\u201d prosecutors said in an indictment released Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDuncan Hunter facilitated the Hunters\u2019 theft of campaign funds by ignoring staff\u2019s multiple warnings \u2026 accusing staff of disloyalty by \u2018trying to create some sort of paper trail on me\u2019 when they raised concerns about improper spending, and continually refusing to remove (his wife\u2019s) access to campaign funds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The charges mark the culmination of months of controversy surrounding a lawmaker once seen as a rising star within the Republican Party and a prominent national voice for Iraq and Afghanistan War-era veterans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter has become a frequent go-to for his party on a host of military issues, and an advocate for both President Donald Trump\u2019s military buildup and a host of intricate defense policy fights on Capitol Hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this summer, he pushed for improvements to the service members\u2019 group life insurance that were included in the annual defense authorization bill. He has been a frequent critic of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2018\/07\/18\/why-a-congressman-is-urging-mattis-to-upgrade-a-fallen-marines-silver-star\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pentagon\u2019s process for handling military honors<\/a>, accusing military bureaucrats of losing touch with rank-and-file troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But following Tuesday\u2019s indictment, chamber leaders announced plans to strip Hunter of his committee assignments \u2014 including his seat on the influential House Armed Services Committee \u2014 while his case is pending. He is expected to appear in court to enter a plea later this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.10news.com\/news\/san-diego-congressman-duncan-hunter-addresses-federal-indictment-in-10news-interview\" target=_blank>San Diego\u2019s ABC 10<\/a> on Wednesday, Hunter called the charges a political attack by federal agencies that are still working on behalf of Democratic Party interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m not worried. I\u2019m looking forward to it,\u201d he told the news station. \u201cThey can try to have a political agenda as our law enforcement, as a U.S. government \u2026 Let them expose themselves for what they are: a politically motivated group of folks. So let\u2019s go to trial.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement to press later in the day, Hunter accused Justice Department officials of trying to sabotage his re-election chances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter two years of investigating, the Department of Justice decided to take this action right before my election,\u201d he said. \u201cFor over two years, I have made myself available to cooperate with this investigation in any manner. To date, I have not been asked one time to answer any questions or address any issue. I have not had one opportunity to present my side of anything in this investigation or to counter any allegations against me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy constituents are not easily misled. I know they can recognize a political agenda when they see it and they can disregard empty rhetoric when they hear it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter, who joined the Marine Corps after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, has portrayed himself on Capitol Hill as a proud veteran and a defender of the best interests of military personnel. He served as an artillery officer in both Iraq (twice) and Afghanistan, and served simultaneously in Congress and the Marine Corps Reserves up until last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the federal indictment paints Hunter as an opportunist who turned campaign donations to cover a host of personal debts and maintain a lavish lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite Hunter\u2019s congressional salary of $174,000 a year, the charging documents note the couple \u201coverdrew their (personal) bank account more than 1,100 times in a seven-year period\u201d and \u201ctheir credit cards were frequently charged to their limit, often with five-figure balances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Illegal expenses include more than $6,100 spent on private school tuition payments, $3,100 on home cable bills, $5,900 on trips to Pittsburgh Steelers games and $6,500 on a family vacation to Hawaii.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, after the San Diego Union Tribune uncovered <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2016\/04\/06\/veteran-lawmaker-questioned-for-campaign-s-video-game-purchases\/\" target=_blank>thousands of dollars in video game charges<\/a> paid for with Hunter\u2019s campaign funds, the congressman claimed his son had mistakenly made the purchases with a computer set up to his campaign credit card. He promised to refund the expense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, as other questionable charges have surfaced, Hunter and his wife have paid back more than $50,000 to the campaign. Federal prosecutors say that returned money doesn\u2019t come close to covering the total improper expenditures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also note that campaign staff repeatedly warned the Hunters about possible legal violations, but were repeatedly rebuffed.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-smg-jwplayer-video\"><atype-video-jwplayer nostick=\"true\" playlisturl=\"https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/playlists\/fCzRqMW8?tags=5ca99a03-a695-4fc8-9a71-c2dcf1d7edbb\" poster=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/video-poster-5ca99a03-a695-4fc8-9a71-c2dcf1d7edbb.jpg\" aspectratio=\"16 \/ 9\" mute autostart=\"false\"><\/atype-video-jwplayer><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Duncan Hunter is indicted on corruption charges, two new leaders in the fight and retirees get new vision and dental options.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the indictment, in early 2010 Hunter\u2019s campaign treasurer \u2015 a long-time confidant of Hunter\u2019s father, a 14-term congressman from the same California district \u2015 recommended taking away the campaign credit card belonging to Margaret to remove the temptation of misuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hunter, then a 33-year-old facing easy re-election to his heavily Republican district later that fall, declined that advice. Instead, federal records say within a few weeks of that meeting, the couple used the campaign cards to buy $64 in groceries, $307 in toys and home decorations, and even a $226 airline ticket for a family member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The indictment also accuses Hunter of frequently ignoring warnings of his wife\u2019s misbehavior, ordering her new campaign credit cards when hers were turned off by staff and repeatedly giving her campaign jobs to boost the family\u2019s income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The couple could face more than 20 years in
