Former Army public affairs officer Steven J. Alvarez, in &#8220;Selling War,&#8221; said the military must change &#8220;the way it conducts its communications business.&#8221; In &#8220;Outsourcing War,&#8221; academic Amy E. Eckert said the U.S. is &#8220;the largest consumer of private force in the world.&#8221; <br\/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the commander in chief-elect&#8217;s choice for national security adviser, retired Army Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, went on a tirade in &#8220;The Field of Fight: How We Can Win the Global War Against Radical Islam and Its Allies.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2016, this reviewer read these five books and 52 others \u2013 roughly one a week. What are the standouts among the titles, each reviewed in Military Times?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are the top 10 in no particular rank. (Plus a bonus pair.) Five are fiction. Five are nonfiction. Yet she avoids legalese and writes convincingly about issues she questions and sometimes resolves. Each story&#8217;s tone is ominous, and some soldiers show up in one story and another. Think Phil Klay&#8217;s &#8220;Redeployment&#8221; with fewer words and less hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"644\" height=\"973\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/off-we-come-to-our-sensen.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-46840\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/off-we-come-to-our-sensen.JPG.jpg 644w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/off-we-come-to-our-sensen.JPG.jpg?resize=199,300 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 644px) 100vw, 644px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span>&#8220;We Come to Our Senses&#8221; by Odie Lindsey<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b><a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/We-Come-Our-Senses-Stories\/dp\/0393249603\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Link: null\">We Come to Our Senses<\/a><\/b>\u00a0by Odie Lindsey, Norton, 192 pages, $24 list price<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An Army veteran&#8217;s past stays &#8220;clogged inside my throat&#8221; but her present is full of obsessions. An enlistee admits &#8220;we are all chasing better narratives.&#8221; An agent tells a screenwriter to &#8220;quit trying to be high-minded and slick&#8221; and &#8220;focus on telling a story.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike characters in these short stories, the writer clearly expresses himself \u2013 and in layers that give the title a double meaning. Hefti, Tyrus Books, 368 pages, $17 paperback list price<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Levi and his band brother meander through myopia with drugs until 9\/11. Post-explosion, the officer has a partial body &#8220;created by violence and saved by soldiers and medics.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His new duty is to find a role in a new life without legs, and the author knows what the path.
