(AP) \u2014 U.S. Air Force veteran Carroll William Joye loves to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s the greatest thing in the world that I ever did, other than give my life to God,\u201d the 82-year-old said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye has been doing what he loves for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He celebrated his 50th anniversary of flying on July 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The feat was recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration on Oct. 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency presented Joye with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faasafety.gov\/content\/masterpilot\/Default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award<\/a>. The award is presented to those who have 50 years or more of practicing and promoting safe aircraft flight. Joye has about 30,000 hours of flight time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt means a whole lot to me,\u201d Joye said of the honor. \u201cIt means I have gone 50 years and have not had a serious incident or accident. It is a big thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">FAA South Carolina Flight Standards District Office officials, including South Carolina FAA Safety Team Program Manager Lanny Cline, presented Joye with the award virtually through Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur heartfelt congratulations,\u201d Cline said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A letter was read from South Carolina FAA District Office Manager Randy DeBerry congratulating Joye for the award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYour professionalism as an airman has contributed to the safety of our national airspace system and has enabled safe air travel by many Americans for more than half a century,\u201d DeBerry wrote. \u201cCongratulations on a very successful aviation career.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter came with a lapel pin, a certified FAA Blue Ribbon package with Joye\u2019s airman records\/achievements and an award certificate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye\u2019s recognition will be posted on the electronic roll of honor online at the FAA Safety website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye viewed the award presentation at the Orangeburg Municipal Airport, where he was once manager. He was surrounded by his family during the presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the award presentation Joye recalled his first solo flight out of Madrid, Spain, now over 50 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI could not get my right leg to stay on the rudder pedals because it was bouncing up and down the whole time,\u201d Joye said. \u201cI was just nervous until my instructor got back into the aircraft with me. Then it stopped. Everything was good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His instructor\u2019s name was Barb Snowden, who was the manager of the Torrejon Air Base aeroclub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe took me on and taught me flying,\u201d Joye said. \u201cI will forever be grateful to him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye said he just loves the idea of being in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have had a chance to fly pretty good-sized jet airplanes and the very smallest of airplanes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye always enjoys the challenge of flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are responsible for getting people in the back from one place to another safely,\u201d Joye said. And the weather can make flying tricky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is good to be 40,000 and 50,000 feet up in the air,\u201d Joye said. \u201cI can\u2019t really describe it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout his flying career, Joye has enjoyed flying \u201csmall airplanes as much or almost as much as I do flying one of those big jets.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked if he still flies, Joye said, \u201cOh yeah!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA friend of mine owns a twin engine airplane and I get a chance to fly with him sometimes,\u201d he said. \u201cI just fly and if I have to sit in right seat, I do. I just like to be there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMr. Aviation,\u201d is how his wife Beverly describes him. \u201cHe would rather fly than eat when he is hungry. If you mention airplanes, he is all for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She called the recognition \u201cawesome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of pilots don\u2019t reach 50 years and hang with it. He is still hanging in there. This is a major honor for him. This man loves to fly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye is originally from Orangeburg but has lived throughout the area, including Branchville, Bamberg and Rowesville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye\u2019s love for flying started after he entered the United States Air Force in 1957.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While in the Air Force stationed over in Spain, he learned to fly and later became a flight instructor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During his stint, he worked as an aircraft mechanic during the Vietnam War. He went to Arizona after Vietnam, working on F-100s and F-104s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From there, Joye went to Ohio and helped develop the C-119 and C-130 gunships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After retiring from the Air Force as a senior master sergeant, he started teaching as an automotive mechanic instructor. He later worked as a corporate pilot and flight instructor, which he still does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye decided to become a flight instructor so he could earn money while continuing to enjoy flying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI never had any desire to go to work for the airlines,\u201d Joye said. \u201cI still enjoy teaching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye also worked for Belk Hudson for a time, flying a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aopa.org\/go-fly\/aircraft-and-ownership\/aircraft-fact-sheets\/piper-navajo-chieftain\" target=\"_blank\">Piper Navajo<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He recalled getting into the plane in Florida with Mr. Hudson and wondering about a certain switch on the plane\u2019s panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt did not seem to belong in the airplane,\u201d Joye said. \u201cWe could not find it in the POH (pilot\u2019s operating handbook). We were talking about that thing and Mr. Hudson\u2019s mike was shorted out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe controller down there was listening to everything we said,\u201d Joye continued. \u201cHe broke in and said, \u2018You guys ought to learn to fly that airplane and learn about all the equipment it has before you get up in there.\u2019 That was comical.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye has been recognized for his flying experience before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the fall of 1995, nominated by former student Raymond S. Graule, Joye was named \u201cCertified Flight Instructor of the Year\u201d by the FAA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2003, Joye was inducted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/scaaonline.com\/scaa-hall-of-fame\/\" target=\"_blank\">South Carolina Aviation Hall of Fame<\/a> by the South Carolina Aviation Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joye has two daughters, two sons and two stepsons; 14 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Air Force
