{"id":55969,"date":"2020-05-06T13:48:29","date_gmt":"2020-05-06T13:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/06\/marines-headed-down-under-following-deployment-delay-due-to-covid-19-concerns\/"},"modified":"2026-08-18T20:53:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T20:53:34","slug":"marines-headed-down-under-following-deployment-delay-due-to-covid-19-concerns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/05\/06\/marines-headed-down-under-following-deployment-delay-due-to-covid-19-concerns\/","title":{"rendered":"Marines headed Down Under following deployment delay due to COVID-19 concerns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Secretary of Defense Mark Esper tweeted Tuesday the annual Marine rotation to Australia was approved and back on the table following a deployment delay due to COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chuck Little, a spokesman for Marine Forces Pacific, told Marine Corps Times in an emailed statement that the government of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2019\/05\/02\/australian-troops-ordered-to-avoid-using-slang-with-us-marines\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Australia <\/a>granted an exemption to travel restrictions to allow the Marine rotation to commence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marines arriving in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/03\/31\/marine-rotation-to-australia-delayed-over-covid-19-concerns\/\" target=_blank>Australia<\/a> will undergo a 14-day quarantine prior to training. The Corps did not provide any dates when the Australia rotation would commence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little didn\u2019t provide the number of Marines headed Down Under. But in March Lt. Bridget Glynn, a spokeswoman for Marine Rotational Force Darwin, previously said this year\u2019s deployment would be roughly the same as last year \u2014 nearly 2,500 Marines.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/coronavirus\/2020\/03\/19\/marines-headed-to-australia-will-have-to-undergo-quarantine-for-two-weeks\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/48523285422_f6bde2fd86_k.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines headed to Australia will have to undergo quarantine for two weeks<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">According to Australia\u2019s Department of Health, there are 565 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of 6:30 am Thursday \u2014 that\u2019s an increase of 111 cases over a 24-hour period.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Marine Corps is committed to ensuring the health and safety of its forces and the Australian people, including local indigenous communities,\u201d Little said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe continue to work closely with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) on the force composition, timing and planned training,\u201d Little explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. and Australia decided in March to delay the Marine deployment in March which was slated to kick off in April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the deployment time frame has changed, Little said &#8220;the changes to this year\u2019s deployment do not change the plans for those in subsequent years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australia is an important ally for the Corps\u2019 plans to confront a rising China in the Indo-Pacific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. remains committed to our mutual defense treaty with Australia and to enhancing interoperability and capability between the Marine Corps and the ADF , which benefits each country\u2019s security and contributes to stability in the Indo-Pacific region,\u201d Little said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Great conversation with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/Australia?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Australia<\/a> MinDef <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/lindareynoldswa?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@lindareynoldswa<\/a> today.
