And the reflective striping on the back will be thinner, a news release said Thursday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the days of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2014\/08\/18\/marines-call-on-cmc-to-bring-back-silkies-and-tattoos\/\" target=\"_blank\">silkies<\/a> \u2014 the beloved soft-as-butter workout shorts with a barely-there inseam \u2014 are still long gone, the news release confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021 the Marine Corps Uniform Board required Marine Corps Systems Command to modernize the physical training uniform for \u201cbetter form, fit and function,\u201d according to the press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In April 2021, Marine Corps Systems Command released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/14\/marines-this-might-be-your-new-physical-training-uniform\/\" target=\"_blank\">an initial prototype<\/a> of new physical training garb boasting moisture-wicking technology and reflective elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/14\/marines-this-might-be-your-new-physical-training-uniform\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"214\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6598130.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Marines: This might be your new physical training uniform<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The uniforms could be available by spring 2022.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 350 Marines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/04\/10\/new-marine-corps-maternity-uniforms-available-in-april\/\" target=\"_blank\">evaluated that prototype<\/a>, according to the news release. And the reviews weren\u2019t glowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe results from last year\u2019s [limited user evaluation] were clear,\u201d Kristine Bealmear, the Marine Corps Systems Command physical training uniform project officer, said in the news release. \u201cThe material was heavy. The shorts were long. The reflective material was restrictive. And so we just kind of took all of that information and we went from there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The redesigned the shirts have lighter material and thinner reflective striping on the back. The new uniforms also come in gender-specific sizes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe found that gender-neutral sizing does not work well for our women Marines,\u201d Bealmear said in the news release. \u201cWith the last prototype, for example, we found that if the shirt fit them well across the bust line, it was too big in the neck. (Tonya Smith\/Marine Corps)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the initial prototype, the physical training shirts would not be able to double as the olive drab undershirt worn with the Marine Corps utility uniform, Marine Corps Times reported in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the old olive drab shirt would be renamed the \u201cutility undershirt,\u201d only to be worn with the utility uniform or for PT when \u201cforward deployed or when tactical requirements dictate per a commander\u2019s guidance,\u201d a 2021 press release said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It appears that will be the case with the new prototype as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The physical training uniform \u201cwill be a stand-alone uniform,\u201d Kelly Flynn, a Marine Corps Systems Command spokeswoman, told Marine Corps Times Thursday. \u201cHowever, further guidance will come from the Marine Corps Uniform Board once the new PTU is approved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most Marines won\u2019t be decked out in the new duds for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fielding of the uniforms is being determined at this time, according to Flynn. But they will come to recruit depots and Officer Candidates School first, she told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, 350 Marines are evaluating the new prototype, and Marine Corps Systems Command will tweak the uniform in response to their feedback, according to the news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Editor\u2019s note: This
