Jim \u201cMad Dog\u201d Mattis<\/a> being asked on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/05\/28\/mad-dog-mattis-sleeps-well-keeps-others-awake\/\" target=\"_blank\">CBS\u2019 Face the Nation in 2017. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNothing,\u201d Mattis replies. \u201cI keep other people awake at night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mattis\u2019 unflinching attitude sets the tone for the rest of the video, which largely focuses on the Corps\u2019 long war-fighting mission, including Belleau Wood in France in 1918 and Ramadi, Iraq, in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd while battlefields and technologies change, the qualities of a Marine are timeless,\u201d a sonorous male voice narrates. \u201cGrit. Strength. Boldness. Discipline. Initiative. Adaptability. Honor. Courage. And commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brig. Gen. Anthony M. Henderson, a Black Marine who in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/03\/04\/us\/politics\/marine-corps-black-general.html\" target=\"_blank\">made New York Times and national headlines <\/a>when the outlet reported he had been passed over three times as a colonel trying to make general, was the first active-duty Marine in the video shown in a sit-down interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe American strength is based upon the fabric of all the different cultures and people that come to it \u2015 and that applies on the battlefield, and I\u2019ve seen that there,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2015\/02\/16\/it-s-your-medal-read-kyle-carpenter-s-inspiring-speech-to-marjah-vets\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine veteran Kyle Carpenter,<\/a> the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient, makes an appearance, as does Col. Nicole Mann, a former Marine pilot with 47 combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mann is now serving as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/08\/18\/marine-astronaut-to-lead-next-nasa-mission-to-space-station\/\">an astronaut<\/a>, and in October launched as commander on a NASA mission to the International Space Station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marine Lance Cpl. Cedar Ross talks about the legacy of his great-grandfather: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/military-honor\/2022\/06\/29\/last-surviving-ww2-medal-of-honor-recipient-woody-williams-dies-at-98\/\" target=\"_blank\">Marine veteran Hershel \u201cWoody\u201d Williams. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Williams died in June at the age of 98. He was the oldest and last surviving World War II Medal of Honor recipient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video nods to the Marine Corps as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2022\/03\/18\/marine-corps-ends-all-3-of-its-crisis-response-deployments\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cAmerica\u2019s No. 1 crisis response force\u201d<\/a> \u2015 a title the Corps still claims, but some experts now have skepticism about given that in May the Marine Corps ended all three of its crisis-response deployments, which had been set up after the 2012 attack on Benghazi, Libya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also nods toward what it says was the Corps\u2019 longest amphibious raid from the sea \u2015 400 Marines launched 370 miles from the amphibious assault ships <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/09\/13\/war-in-afghanistan-ended-much-as-it-began-with-us-marines-defending-a-runway\/\" target=\"_blank\">Peleliu and Baatan into Afghanistan<\/a> in 2001, when the nation was reeling from the 9\/11 attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/marinecorpstimes\/news\/your-marine-corps\/2021\/09\/13\/war-in-afghanistan-ended-much-as-it-began-with-us-marines-defending-a-runway\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6797434.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">War in Afghanistan ended much as it began \u2015 with U.S. Marines defending a runway<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">After watching the events of Sept. 11, 2001, unfold on televisions in bars and on ship, the Marines of the 15th MEU knew they were going to war.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The focus on the Corps\u2019 amphibious capability points back to the sea, which is a major goal of its 2030 Force Design plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toward the end of the video, Commandant Gen. David Berger gives a short address in which he also hints at his Force Design 2030 strategy, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2022\/03\/21\/jeopardizing-national-security-what-is-happening-to-our-marine-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\">c<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinecorpstimes.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2022\/03\/21\/jeopardizing-national-security-what-is-happening-to-our-marine-corps\/\" target=\"_blank\">ontroversial among many vocal veterans<\/a> and is reshaping the modern Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAcross the force, we continue to innovate and experiment in preparation for the future fight,\u201d Berger says. \u201cWhere we will fight might be uncertain, but we prepare for uncertainty. When called, we will fight, and we will win \u2014 today, tomorrow and in the future. These victories are not won because of our technology or our equipment, but because of all of you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The message ends with Berger and Sgt. Maj. of the Marine Corps Troy Black declaring, \u201cSemper Fidelis. Happy birthday, Marines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The video includes footage of every Marine expeditionary force in exercises and operations all across the globe, according to Capt. Tom Kleiber, head of the team that produced the birthday message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLike everything the Marine Corps does, the production of the video message is a team effort,\u201d Kleiber, production and engagement director for Headquarters Marine Corps, told Marine Corps Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nov. 10 will mark 247 years since the founding of the Marine Corps in Philadelphia\u2019s Tun Tavern in 1775.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Marine Corps Times editor Andrea Scott contributed to this report.<\/i><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The video features retired Marine Gen.
