The products have become popular in recent years with people looking to discover potential medical issues or uncover information about ancestry and even find unknown relatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/news\/pentagon-warns-military-members-dna-kits-pose-personal-and-operational-risks-173304318.html\" target=_blank>Yahoo News<\/a> first reported the Pentagon\u2019s warning, which was based on a DoD memo obtained by the news outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yahoo News uploaded a copy of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/440727436\/DOD-memo-on-DNA-testing#from_embed\" target=_blank> DoD memo<\/a>, dated Dec. 20, which was signed by Joseph Kernan, the undersecretary of defense for intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese DTC [direct-to-consumer] genetic tests are largely unregulated and could expose personal and genetic information, and potentially create unintended security consequences and increased risk to the joint force and mission,\u201d the memo reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMoreover, there is increased concern in the scientific community that outside parties are exploiting the use of genetic data for questionable purposes, including mass surveillance and the ability to track individuals without their authorization or awareness,\u201d the memo states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cmdr. Sean Robertson, a Pentagon spokesman, told Military Times in an emailed statement that the DoD wants to ensure service members are \u201caware of the risks of Direct to Consumer (DTC) genetic testing\u201d and that some of these companies \u201cmay or may not provide reliable, accurate results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe unintentional discovery of markers that may affect readiness could affect a service member\u2019s career, and the information from DTC genetic testing may disclose this information,\u201d Robertson said. \u201cBecause of this, until further assessment, it is advised that service members receive this information from a licensed professional rather than a consumer product,\u201d Robertson said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DoD memo stated that a some consumer genetic testing companies are luring troops to use their services through military discounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a number of popular companies like<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/corporate\/about-ancestry\/our-story\" target=_blank> Ancestry<\/a>.com where people can send a DNA sample to glean information about their forebears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cProtecting our customers\u2019 privacy and being good stewards of their data is Ancestry\u2019s highest priority. Ancestry does not share customer DNA data with insurers, employers, or third-party marketers,\u201d a spokesperson for the company said in an emailed statement to Military Times. \u201cAncestry will also not share customer\u2019s personal information with law enforcement unless compelled to by valid legal process, such as a court order or search warrant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFurthermore, Ancestry recognizes our responsibility to lead by example and set the bar for industry innovation. For that reason, we partnered with the Future of Privacy Forum and other personal genomic testing companies to release the Privacy Best Practices for Consumer Genetic Testing Services. These guidelines are the first of their kind for our industry, and set a self-governed policy framework for the collection, protection, sharing and use of data collected by consumer genomics companies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ancestry.com\/corporate\/about-ancestry\/company-facts\" target=_blank>Ancestry\u2019s<\/a> website says it has nearly 3 million paying subscribers and has tested more than 15 million people\u2019s DNA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon memo did not provide specific details regarding
