{"id":60206,"date":"2019-07-02T17:40:57","date_gmt":"2019-07-02T17:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/07\/02\/this-units-going-airborne-with-the-armys-newest-sniper-rifle\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:02:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:02:30","slug":"this-units-going-airborne-with-the-armys-newest-sniper-rifle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/2019\/07\/02\/this-units-going-airborne-with-the-armys-newest-sniper-rifle\/","title":{"rendered":"This unit\u2019s going airborne with the Army\u2019s newest sniper rifle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soldiers with the 82nd Airborne recently conducted tests of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/shot-show\/2018\/01\/24\/longtime-military-optics-maker-unveils-new-scope-for-army-snipers\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army\u2019s newest<\/a> offering for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2019\/01\/24\/special-operations-snipers-are-getting-a-new-upgraded-riflescope\/\" target=\"_blank\">compact sniper rifle<\/a> \u2014 and they liked it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month snipers with the 82nd at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, put the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/07\/here-are-some-of-the-big-gear-upgrades-coming-soon-from-peo-soldier\/\" target=\"_blank\">Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System <\/a>through airborne infiltration test trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the Operational Test Command\u2019s Airborne and Special Operations Test Directorate NCOs, Sgt. 1st Class Ross Martin, said in a release that the compact nature of the rifle is appealing to airborne forces who have to maneuver their equipment in cramped planes for jumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Typically, the longer-barrel standard rifles can be cumbersome.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2018\/05\/08\/socom-snipers-will-ditch-their-bullets-for-this-new-round-next-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SOF-sniper.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">SOCOM snipers will ditch their bullets for this new round next year<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The top Special Operations Forces snipers will replace their 7.62mm sniper rifles with a the 6.5mm Creedmoor, which doubles their hit probability at 1,000m, increases their effective range by nearly half, reduces wind drift by a third and has less recoil.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCurrent sniper systems are equipped with 20-inch barrels, sound suppression systems and full-length stocks that provide accuracy and a stable firing platform required of any precision rifle,\u201d said David Parris, a CSASS trainer with U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command\u2019s Soldier Weapons Support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the Army shifts focus to dense urban environments the equipment, such as the sniper rifle, follow suit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe CSASS is smaller, lighter, and more ergonomic, as the majority of the changes were requested by the soldiers themselves,\u201d said Victor Yarosh told Army Times in 2018. Yarosh works on the Army\u2019s Soldier Weapons program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe rifle is easier to shoot and has less recoil, all while shooting the same round as the M110. [Additionally,] the CSASS has increased accuracy, which equates to higher hit percentages at longer ranges,\u201d Yarosh said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The newest CSASS not only has a shorter barrel, but also an adjustable stock for easier transport and comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe CSASS is much shorter and lighter than our current system, which will make long dismounted movements and reaction to contact more efficient,\u201d said Spc. Nicholas Farmer, a sniper in C Troop, 1st Battalion, 73rd Cavalry Regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most M4s max out at near 300 meters, but the CSASS allows shooters to reach out to 600 meters. (Chris OLeary\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has a different buttstock and barrel twist than previous CSASS models, comes in just under 10 pounds and uses a Sig Sauer Tango 6 variable 1&#215;6 power scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spc. William Holland, a sniper with 2nd BN, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, said that the rifle is \u201clightweight and compact, [which] makes for a more manageable load during post drop operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Being airborne, the soldiers rely on maintaining their weapon\u2019s optic zero, given the jostling and sometimes hard impact nature of their jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To measure how well the CSASS maintains that zero, the test team used a mobile weapons bore sight collimator to ensure the \u201cpre-mission\u201d zero was not degraded by parachute infiltration shock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once this data was collected, snipers conducted a known distance live fire after static line and military free fall operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Military Times reported in January that Special Operations Command snipers will soon use the Sig Sauer TANGO6T 1-6&#215;24 Riflescope for their CSASS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sig Sauer also won the optic competition for the Army\u2019s Squad Designated Marksman Rifle with their TANGO6 scope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SDMR program has been part of a larger shift for the Army to put sniper-like capabilities inside of the squad, giving the base unit of the formation more range and lethality with its M110 Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System, or CSASS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tactically, Army leaders see the sniper as a force enhancer because they can conduct a number of missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey provide a surveillance mission where they use their high-powered scope to observe activity downrange,\u201d Yarosh said. \u201cA sniper can pin down an enemy force through sniper concealment and engagement to provide the right shots at the right time. They can also prevent an enemy force from moving out of cover, which allows our maneuver forces to exploit the enemy by moving into a better position and
