John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican who backs President Donald Trump\u2019s hardline immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until this week, Mexican national Paola Clouatre had been one of tens of thousands of people in ICE custody as the Trump administration continues to press immigration officers to arrest 3,000 people a day suspected of being in the U.S. illegally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Emails reviewed by The Associated Press show that Kennedy\u2019s office said Friday that it put in a request for the Department of Homeland Security to release her after a judge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/07\/25\/mexican-national-married-to-marine-vet-seeks-release-from-ice-custody\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/07\/25\/mexican-national-married-to-marine-vet-seeks-release-from-ice-custody\/\">halted her deportation order<\/a> earlier that week. By Monday, she was out of a remote ICE detention center in north Louisiana and home in Baton Rouge with her veteran husband Adrian Clouatre and their two young children.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2025\/07\/25\/mexican-national-married-to-marine-vet-seeks-release-from-ice-custody\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25205724918806.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Mexican national married to Marine vet seeks release from ICE custody<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Once a week, the veteran makes an eight-hour roundtrip trek from Baton Rouge so his wife can breastfeed their 4-month-old baby and see their 2-year-old.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kennedy\u2019s constituent services representative, Christy Tate, congratulated Adrian Clouatre on his wife\u2019s release and thanked him for his military service. \u201cI am so happy for you and your family,\u201d Tate wrote in an email to Adrian Clouatre. \u201cGod is truly great!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kennedy\u2019s office proved \u201cinstrumental\u201d in engaging with the Department of Homeland Security, according to Carey Holliday, the family\u2019s attorney. Kennedy\u2019s office did not provide further comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another Louisiana Republican, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, also intervened recently with the Department of Homeland Security to secure the release of an Iranian mother from ICE detention following widespread outcry. The woman has lived for decades in New Orleans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kennedy has generally been a staunch supporter of Trump\u2019s immigration policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIllegal immigration is illegal \u2014 duh,\u201d Kennedy posted on his Facebook page on July 17, amid a series of recent media appearances decrying efforts to prevent ICE officers from making arrests. In April, however, he criticized the Trump administration for mistakenly deporting a Maryland man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Senator\u2019s office requests mother\u2019s release from ICE custody<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Homeland Security previously told AP it considered Paola Clouatre to be \u201cillegally\u201d in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An email chain shared by Adrian Clouatre shows that the family\u2019s attorney reached out to Kennedy\u2019s office in early June after Paola Clouatre was detained in late May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tate received Paola Clouatre\u2019s court documents by early July and said she then contacted ICE, according to the email exchange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5712\" height=\"4284\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25205724918806.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-70986\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25205724918806.jpg.jpg 5712w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25205724918806.jpg.jpg?resize=300,225 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25205724918806.jpg.jpg?resize=768,576 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25205724918806.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,768 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25205724918806.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1152 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP25205724918806.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1536 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 5712px) 100vw, 5712px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Adrian Clouatre holds his 3-month-old daughter Lyn and his nearly 2-year-old son Noah at their home in Baton Rouge on June 17. After Adrian Clouatre notified Kennedy\u2019s office, Tate said she \u201csent the request to release\u201d Paola Clouatre to DHS and shared a copy of the judge\u2019s motion with the agency, emails show.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an email several days later, Tate said that ICE told her it \u201ccontinues to make custody determinations on a case-by-case basis based on the specific circumstances of each case\u201d and had received the judge\u2019s decision from Kennedy\u2019s office \u201cfor consideration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next working day, Paola Clouatre was released from custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will continue to keep you, your family and others that are experiencing the same issues in our prayers,\u201d Tate said in an email to Adrian Clouatre. \u201cIf you need our assistance in the future, please contact us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back with her children<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paola Clouatre had been detained by ICE officers on May 27 during an appointment related to her green card application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She had entered the country as a minor with her mother from Mexico more than a decade ago and was legally processed while seeking asylum, she, her husband and her attorney say. But Clouatre\u2019s mother later failed to show up for a court date, leading a judge to issue a deportation order against Paola Clouatre in 2018, though by then she had become estranged from her mother and was homeless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Homeland Security did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Clouatre\u2019s release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adrian Clouatre said he wished the agency would \u201cactually look at the circumstances\u201d before detaining people like his wife. \u201cIt shouldn\u2019t just be like a blanket \u2018Oh, they\u2019re illegal, throw them in ICE detention.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reunited with her breastfeeding infant daughter and able to snuggle with her toddler son, Paola Clouatre told AP she feels like a mother again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was feeling bad,\u201d she said of detention. \u201cI was feeling like I failed my kids.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It will likely be a multiyear court process before Paola Clouatre\u2019s immigration court proceedings are formally closed, but things look promising, and she should be able to obtain her green card eventually, her attorney said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, she\u2019s wearing an ankle monitor, but still able to pick up life where she left off, her husband says.
