{"id":66758,"date":"2019-06-27T14:31:39","date_gmt":"2019-06-27T14:31:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/06\/27\/new-research-shows-the-army-could-soon-develop-a-rifle-with-hyper-velocity-rounds\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T07:09:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T07:09:15","slug":"new-research-shows-the-army-could-soon-develop-a-rifle-with-hyper-velocity-rounds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/2019\/06\/27\/new-research-shows-the-army-could-soon-develop-a-rifle-with-hyper-velocity-rounds\/","title":{"rendered":"New research shows the Army could soon develop a rifle with hyper-velocity rounds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army has been on the hunt for a new rifle for nearly 30 years to replace the rifles it currently fields in its infantry units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once upon a time, the service seemed to be close to adopting a new weapon, though the projects <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2017\/11\/29\/army-cancels-short-term-rifle-replacement-program\/\" target=_blank>ultimately went nowhere<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps soldiers should be glad that the Army didn\u2019t go with the infamous Heckler &amp; Koch G11 or the futuristic XM29 OICW, or the ill-fated XM8 assault rifle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of a very conventional rifle firing the 5.56 NATO round, the <a href=\"https:\/\/techlinkcenter.org\/us-army-researchers-are-turning-it-up-to-11-to-make-hypervelocity-firearms\/\" target=\"_blank\">Army is now rapidly progressing<\/a> towards developing and field-testing a new weapon that can double the muzzle speeds of a bullet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The primary advantages to this new (and no-so-new) technology are insane armor-penetration capabilities at close ranges, and next-level accuracy at longer ranges.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/05\/the-armys-saw-and-m4-replacements-will-both-fire-this-more-accurate-and-deadly-round\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-saw-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The Army\u2019s SAW and M4 replacements will both fire this more accurate and deadly round<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The new round will put soldier ranges out to 600 meters, twice as far as the effective range of the M4.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army Research Laboratory scientists and engineers boast an even greater feat &#8212; instead of needing a massive weapon with external power sources, a la rail guns, this new rifle doesn\u2019t require a barrel longer than 10 inches (for reference, an M4A1 carbine is typically outfitted with a 14.5 inch barrel). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All that\u2019s needed to send bullets hurtling out at incredible speeds is a new propellant and a special receiver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea for the new receiver and its internal assembly dates back to the 1930s where the German military developed \u201ctapered-bore\u201d (popularly referred to as \u201csqueeze-bore\u201d at the time) anti-tank guns that shot medium-caliber rounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This concept was revived and improved by the ARL by revamping the chamber of the gun to withstand higher pressures, while ensuring that the bullet casing can still be cycled out and a new round cycled in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the greater pressure coupled with the round\u2019s already potent propellant, the bullet can achieve stunning muzzle velocities. In testing, the Army\u2019s prototype, equipped with a 24 inch barrel, could produce muzzle velocities in excess of 4,600 to 5,750 feet per second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the ARL, the ultimate goal for the new tapered-bore design is to downsize it to the point where it can be fielded on fully-automatic rifle-caliber guns the size of personal defense weapons which can be used in close quarters battle in addition to ranged combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, the ARL hopes that their 10 inch barrel version will be used with remotely-operated vehicles and drones, which minimize risk and boost survivability for soldiers in combat zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s no target date on when the technology will reach full maturity, but given the progress the ARL has already made with regards to refining the tapered-bore gun, it shouldn\u2019t be much longer until the Army has prototypes in hand of what could be its next-generation rifle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The primary advantages to this
