Every other brewery or beer-related degree is over 90 percent biology and chemistry. While those topics are certainly important, we also work closely with our engineering school, hospitality department and business school to make sure that when our brewing students graduate, they can choose the path they want to go down. Once accepted to MSU Denver, they can declare their major as Brewery Operations and be ready to start taking brewing classes immediately. Western Kentucky University has an office specifically dedicated to expediting veterans’ applications and financial needs.

The pitch:

WKU has offered courses in brewing and distilling science for about 10 years, according to Andrew McMichael, program coordinator. Students have been placed into brewing internships for several years.

New undergraduate and graduate major programs are expected this year. The undergraduate major will be designed to be paired with other majors in line with students’ interests, McMichael said. “So a student who wants to be a brewer or distiller would likely major in a science program as well. A student interested in the business side of things would probably major in a business program and the brewing major. A student interested in bottle and label design would pair our program with an art degree. Or, students can simply take the certificate if they’re just looking to get a credential to help them on an application,” he said.

Many faculty members at WKU have military backgrounds, and the school draws students from the areas around Forts Campbell and Knox.

McMichael said the large on-campus brewery gives students a unique opportunity to gain experience they would not otherwise attain. “Likewise, our program is not a hard-science fermentation program. After getting feedback from brewers and distillers, we designed our program to meet what we were told were the most pressing needs of people going into the industry,” he said. “Our program is meant to graduate well-rounded students who will be ready to face all of the challenges of working in the craft beverage industry.”

McMichael touts his school’s work with military students. “WKU has provided online classes to the military for many, many years, and in October 2009 even packaged up books and other materials that were airdropped to one of our online history students and his unit at a forward base in Afghanistan. My face-to-face students got no slack from me on late homework that semester. If the guy getting shot at in Afghanistan could turn his homework in on time, they darn well could, too.
