{"id":69274,"date":"2018-01-31T20:35:47","date_gmt":"2018-01-31T20:35:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/smg.go-vip.net\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/01\/31\/why-did-iran-stop-harassing-us-navy-ships\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T19:49:29","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T19:49:29","slug":"why-did-iran-stop-harassing-us-navy-ships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/2018\/01\/31\/why-did-iran-stop-harassing-us-navy-ships\/","title":{"rendered":"Why did Iran stop harassing US Navy ships?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Iranian military has stopped harassing U.S. naval vessels in the Persian Gulf, a move that U.S. military officials welcome but cannot explain, reported the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/irans-fast-boats-stop-harassing-u-s-navy-baffling-military-1516897301\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Wall Street Journal.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the past two years, Iranian \u201cfast boats,\u201d armed with .50-caliber machine guns and rocket launchers, have been sailing within shooting range of U.S. Navy ships, exacerbating an already strained relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially tense moments include an incident from September 2016, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/pay-benefits\/military-benefits\/2016\/09\/06\/official-7-iranian-boats-came-after-u-s-ship-in-the-persian-gulf\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\">seven Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy ships<\/a> approached a single U.S. coastal patrol ship. In August 2016, small Iranian boats repeatedly approached U.S. ships, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/2016\/08\/25\/u-s-warship-fires-3-warning-shots-as-iran-escalates-confrontations\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">warning shots<\/a> fired by the U.S. Navy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over 30 unsafe or unprofessional incidents occurred in 2016, and continued to occur into 2017, but U.S. military officials told Journal that there have been no such events since last August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI hope it\u2019s because we have messaged our readiness\u2026and that it isn\u2019t tolerable or how professional militaries operate,\u201d said Army Gen. Joseph Votel, commander of U.S. Central Command, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Rear Adm. Ali Ozamei, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, told an Iranian news agency this week that it is the American behavior that has changed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-iran-usa-gulf\/iran-cites-change-in-u-s-navy-behavior-in-gulf-u-s-denies-idUSKBN1FI1UP\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Reuters reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThey pay more attention to international regulations and avoid approaching Iran\u2019s territorial waters,\u201d Ozmaei was quoted as saying by Tasnim news agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Iran continues to harass U.S. sailors with the use of drones, otherwise referred to as unmanned aerial vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven with the decreased incidents, we remain concerned with the increased number of Iranian UAVs operating in international airspace at night without navigation lights or an active transponder as would be expected according to international norms,\u201d Cmdr. Bill Urban, spokesman for the U.S. Navy\u2019s Fifth Fleet, told the Journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe continue to advocate for all maritime forces to conform to
