{"id":69285,"date":"2020-07-15T21:23:33","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T21:23:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/07\/15\/destroyer-pinckney-challenges-venezuelas-maritime-territorial-claims\/"},"modified":"2026-08-17T14:20:05","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T14:20:05","slug":"destroyer-pinckney-challenges-venezuelas-maritime-territorial-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/2020\/07\/15\/destroyer-pinckney-challenges-venezuelas-maritime-territorial-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"Destroyer Pinckney challenges Venezuela\u2019s maritime territorial claims"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the second time in three weeks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southcom.mil\/News\/PressReleases\/Article\/2275086\/uss-pinckney-freedom-of-navigation-operation-challenges-venezuelas-excessive-ma\/\" target=_blank>U.S. Southern Command<\/a> has sent a Navy warship through waters off the coast of Venezuela, the combatant command said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guided-missile destroyer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.navy.mil\/surfor\/ddg91\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=_blank>Pinckney<\/a> steamed through waters off the South American country\u2019s coast to challenge Caracas\u2019 \u201cexcessive maritime claims in international waters.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such freedom of navigation operations, or FONOPs, occur regularly in the South China Sea, where the U.S. military regularly contests Beijing\u2019s territorial claims, but several such operations have also taken place off Venezuela this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A SOUTHCOM release announcing the Pinckney FONOP decried \u201cthe illegitimate Maduro regime\u201d of the country\u2019s authoritarian president, Nicolas Maduro, and alleges that his government \u201cimproperly claims\u201d waters that lie three miles outside of Venezuela\u2019s 12-nautical-mile sea territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pinckney is operating in the Caribbean Sea with other Navy and Coast Guard vessels on a counter-narcotics mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2020\/06\/24\/us-navy-conducts-fonop-off-venezuelan-coast\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/nitze.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">U.S. Navy conducts FONOP off Venezuelan coast<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move comes amid heightened tensions between the countries.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe will exercise our lawful right to freely navigate international waters without acquiescing to unlawful claims,\u201d SOUTHCOM\u2019s commander, Adm. Craig Faller, said in a statement. \u201cThe guaranteed rights of nations to access, transit and navigate international waters is not subject to impositions or restrictions that blatantly violate international law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, the warship Nitze conducted a FONOP off Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nitze\u2019s FONOP followed a similar operation in January by the littoral combat ship Detroit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The United States has joined nearly 60 other countries in backing Venezuela\u2019s opposition leader, Juan Guaid\u00f3, as the country\u2019s legitimate ruler, rather than the dictatorial Maduro, who is accused of illegitimately winning a 2018 election that banned other opponents and driving his oil-rich country into financial ruin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"200\" height=\"113\"
