That can be especially true in the vast Pacific, where the bombers routinely fly training sorties and missions aimed at deterring aggression in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it remains to be seen what new amenities the B-52 community might come up with, it\u2019s no secret that the bomber isn\u2019t exactly the lap of luxury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tight quarters and the deafening roar of its eight engines make the act of counting sheep a hard-fought battle; there\u2019s only one bunk where fading airmen can catch some shuteye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plane\u2019s seats can force its five-person crews to spend hours hunched over, making their backs creak with stiffness. Options for entertainment and cooking are few. And urinals without a curtain dare service members to forgo privacy when nature calls. If someone absolutely must go No. 2, they\u2019re required to store it in a trash bag that stays along for the ride until the jet lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/air\/2022\/03\/08\/heres-how-21st-century-design-is-giving-60-year-old-b-52s-a-new-lease-on-life\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/B-52-Afghanistan.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Modern design technique gives 60-year-old B-52s new lease on life<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The B-52&#039;s current engines, which date back to the early 1960s, are soon reaching the end of their life spans and must be replaced.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boosting the B-52\u2032s livability could make missions more manageable for airmen who are expected to continue flying onboard the bomber for nearly four more decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force is in the midst of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2024\/02\/12\/the-new-b-52-how-the-air-force-is-prepping-to-fly-century-old-bombers\/\" target=\"_blank\">massive modernization effort<\/a> to outfit the Stratofortress fleet with new engines and an array of tools that can streamline airmen\u2019s jobs in flight and make the jets more formidable in combat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As part of that initiative, the service will test how adding a signals jammer, originally developed for the Navy\u2019s EA-18G Growler, could turn the B-52 into an electronic-attack plane. The Next-Generation Jammer Mid-Band is an external pod that can \u201cdisrupt and degrade enemy air defense and ground communication systems,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/Resources\/Fact-Files\/Display-FactFiles\/Article\/2395363\/next-generation-jammer-mid-band\/\" target=\"_blank\">Navy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers want the Air Force secretary to brief HASC by Feb. 1, 2025, on the schedule for that demonstration and how B-52 crews could leverage the jammer in a real-world fight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are plenty of upgrades coming for the B-52.
