(Photo from Wikimedia Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kalashnikov\u2019s RPK-16 aims to give Russian infantrymen a gun with a similar underlying concept \u2014 one that can be easily and quickly transformed to suit the purposes of the mission ahead, giving platoons more versatility when in the field or in-theater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/2018\/05\/02\/hey-marines-russian-grunts-get-new-assault-rifles-too\/\" target=_blank>on the new AK-12<\/a> rifle, also created and manufactured by Kalashnikov, the RPK-16 is designed to replace the aged RPK-74 automatic rifle, which has served the Russian military since the mid-70s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it comes with the gas-operated piston system Kalashnikov has essentially built most of their weapons on, it comes with a few differentiating features that make it a major improvement over its predecessor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RPK-16-2.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-79621\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RPK-16-2.jpg.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RPK-16-2.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RPK-16-2.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/RPK-16-2.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The RPK-16 in action with the 95-rd drum mag (Photo Kalashnikov Concern)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The RPK-16, <a href=\"https:\/\/kalashnikov.media\/blog\/chto-takoe-ruchnoy-pulemet-rpk-16-i-kak-on-ustroen\" target=_blank>which fires from a closed bolt<\/a>, comes with two main barrels, 21.7 inches and 14.6 inches apiece. Both barrels can be easily removed and switched at the user or the armorer level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The longer barrel is for the gun\u2019s role as a light machine gun, delivering 700 rounds per minute at the cyclic rate. Should the user require it, the RPK-16 can be adapted into a ranged weapon by keeping the barrel and adding a magnified optic on the standard Picatinny rail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For use as an assault rifle or a shorter-barreled squad automatic weapon (SAW), the user simply has to swap to the 14.6 inch barrel. The RPK-16 can field a detachable bipod, a variety of electronics and scopes, and comes with <a href=\"https:\/\/kalashnikov.media\/article\/weapons\/spetsialisty-moskovskogo-vysshego-obshchevoyskovogo-komandnogo-uchilishcha-pristupili-k-opytno-voysk\" target=_blank>a folding buffer tube-style <\/a>butt stock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Chambered for the 5.45&#215;39 mm cartridge &#8212; currently the standard of the Russian military &#8212; RPK-16 can feed from any 30 or 45-round AK or RPK-74 magazine in addition to the 95-round drum mag built specifically for the new gun by Kalashnikov.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Kalashnikov, the RPK is designed to function in a similar role to the US Marine Corps\u2019 M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle, while boosting capacity with the larger 95-round mag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s no official word on target dates for the RPK-16\u2032s widespread adoption, but the company expects to complete testing by the end of <a href=\"https:\/\/kalashnikov.media\/article\/weapons\/ispytaniya-pulemeta-rpk-16-zavershat-v-pervom-kvartale-2019-goda\" target=_blank>Q1 FY2019<\/a>. However, Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation has reportedly already <a href=\"https:\/\/tass.ru\/armiya-i-opk\/4935238\" target=_blank>signed a contract earlier <\/a>this month with Kalashnikov to begin procuring the gun en masse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As always, Russian \u201cspecial purpose\u201d Spetsnaz units will also be taking delivery of the new gun
