Ford<\/a> and its strike group are slated to deploy from Naval Station Norfolk in October for a \u201cservice-retained deployment\u201d in the Atlantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While underway, the strike group will work alongside allies and partners targeting \u201cinnovation and interoperability\u201d as the crew becomes better acquainted with the vessel\u2019s new capabilities, according to 2nd Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Daniel Dwyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/naval\/2022\/02\/03\/us-navy-carrier-ford-to-go-on-unusual-deployment-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cshort\u201d service-retained deployment<\/a> means that the Ford\u2019s strike group will operate under the authority of Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday, rather than a global force management deployment in which the strike group falls under the authority of the geographic combatant commander, Dwyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis will be a service-retained deployment, providing the Ford Strike Group Commander a chance to test the carrier\u2019s air operability prior to embarking on its first global force management deployment next year,\u201d Dwyer told reporters Sept. 26.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis historic service-retained deployment is an opportunity for the U.S. Navy to come together with other members of the NATO alliance to exercise and train within the Atlantic and its littorals while testing out advanced technologies on the first new class of U.S. aircraft carrier in more than 40 years,\u201d Dwyer said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/01\/04\/new-in-2022-uss-gerald-r-ford-expected-to-deploy-for-the-first-time-this-year\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6772244.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New in 2022: USS Gerald R. (MCSNA Daniel Perez\/Navy)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly all of Carrier Air Wing 8 will embark on the Ford, including all eight squadrons comprising F-18 Super Hornets, E-2D Advanced Hawkeyes and EA-18G Growlers, along with MH-60 Sierra and MH-60 Sea Hawk helicopters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ford\u2019s carrier strike group also includes the destroyers Ramage, McFaul and Thomas Hudner, the cruiser Normandy, the replenishment oiler Joshua Humphreys, dry cargo ship Robert E. Peary and U.S. Coast Guard cutter Hamilton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The carrier was originally scheduled to deploy in 2018, but encountered multiple technical problems, equipment malfunctions and delays as at least 23 new technologies were incorporated into the design since construction of the ship kicked off in 2005. In the summer of 2021, the ship conducted three shock trials \u2014 marking the first time a carrier has conducted underwater shock testing since the Theodore Roosevelt did so in 1987.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ford then completed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/03\/02\/uss-ford-completes-maintenance-availability-sea-trials-ahead-of-2022-deployment\/\" target=\"_blank\">six-month maintenance availability<\/a> at Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia, followed by sea trials at Naval Station Norfolk this
