{"id":77263,"date":"2020-05-20T18:02:41","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T18:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/05\/20\/more-than-one-company-could-get-cash-to-build-the-air-forces-ai-equipped-skyborg-drone\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T23:39:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T23:39:36","slug":"more-than-one-company-could-get-cash-to-build-the-air-forces-ai-equipped-skyborg-drone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2020\/05\/20\/more-than-one-company-could-get-cash-to-build-the-air-forces-ai-equipped-skyborg-drone\/","title":{"rendered":"More than one company could get cash to build the Air Force\u2019s AI-equipped Skyborg drone"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Air Force has kicked off a competition for one of its most highly anticipated tech programs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/air\/2019\/03\/14\/introducing-skyborg-your-new-ai-wingman\/\" target=\"_blank\">a drone known as Skyborg<\/a> that will use artificial intelligence to make decisions in battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service released a solicitation May 15 for Skyborg prototypes, which will merge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2019\/05\/22\/under-skyborg-program-f-35-and-f-15ex-jets-could-control-drone-sidekicks\/\" target=_blank>autonomous, low-cost aircraft with a suite of artificial intelligence capabilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force envisions Skyborg as a family of drones \u2014 each designed for a specific mission or set of missions \u2014 with modular hardware and software payloads and a common AI backbone, which will allow software to be rapidly updated across the fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/techwatch\/2020\/02\/21\/here-is-the-first-thing-the-air-force-would-fund-if-it-had-more-money-in-fy21\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Here is the first thing the Air Force would fund if it had more money in FY21<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Congress is going to have to step in if it wants the Air Force to make a Skyborg prototype this year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Air Force intends to give multiple companies $400 million to develop different versions of the Skyborg system, although it reserves the right to award just one or no contracts. Proposals are due June 15, with awards projected around July 8, according to the solicitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once under contract, companies will \u201cconduct research to develop, demonstrate, integrate and transition air vehicle, payload and autonomy technologies and systems that will provide affordable, revolutionary capabilities to the warfighter through the Skyborg program,\u201d the Air Force said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The service previously intended to use experimentation and prototyping to have Skyborg operational by 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skyborg will be what the service calls an attritable system, meaning that aircraft loss is expected and can be tolerated even though the system is not considered expendable and can be reused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aircraft should \u201cgenerate massed combat power with minimal logistical footprints,\u201d with cost per unit and the price of operating and maintaining the air vehicles a \u201csmall fraction\u201d for that of the Air Force\u2019s existing fighter inventory, according to the solicitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Air Force acquisition executive Will Roper has compared Skyborg to R2-D2, the Star Wars droid that feeds Luke Skywalker helpful information while piloting an X-Wing. Skyborg would build up efficacy on its own via artificial intelligence by working with manned pilots, who would issue commands to the drone and provide feedback on the data presented by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, Roper told Defense News that the service was exploring the possibility of teaming Skyborg both with the Lockheed Martin F-35 and the Boeing F-15EX aircraft. The ability to team manned fighter jets with smart, autonomous drones could \u201copen up the door for an entirely different way to do aerial combat,\u201d he said in May 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can take risk with some systems to keep others safer,\u201d he said at the time. \u201cWe can separate the sensor and the shooter. Right now they\u2019re collocated on a single platform with a person in it. In the future, we can separate them out, put sensors ahead of shooters, put our manned systems behind the unmanned.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numerous aircraft companies are expected to bid on the Skyborg solicitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/digital-show-dailies\/paris-air-show\/2019\/06\/17\/us-air-force-looking-to-fast-track-cash-to-kratos-defense-for-additional-valkyrie-drones\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kratos Defense and Security Solutions<\/a> is already working with the Air Force on its XQ-58A Valkyrie drone, which logged its fourth successful flight test in January as part of the Low Cost Attritable Aircraft Technology program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, Boeing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/air\/2020\/05\/04\/boeing-rolls-out-australias-first-loyal-wingman-combat-drone\/\" target=\"_blank\">rolled out its own loyal wingman drone<\/a>, the Airpower Teaming System. The Royal Australian Air Force has committed to buy three of those systems for experimentation under its Loyal Wingman Advanced Development Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">General Atomics and Lockheed Martin\u2019s Skunk Works each plan to offer their own aircraft proposals, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcemag.com\/usaf-search-for-skyborg-drones-starting-soon\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to Air Force Magazine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fiscal 2021, the Air Force intends to spend $157.6 million across its three \u201cvanguard programs,\u201d which includes the Skyborg effort. The service also included an additional $25 million for Skyborg on its unfunded priorities list, which would allow it to begin integrating UAVs with artificial intelligence
