{"id":79666,"date":"2023-03-06T20:38:40","date_gmt":"2023-03-06T20:38:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/03\/06\/these-forgotten-mogadishu-vets-remember-the-operation-their-way\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T03:55:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T03:55:36","slug":"these-forgotten-mogadishu-vets-remember-the-operation-their-way","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2023\/03\/06\/these-forgotten-mogadishu-vets-remember-the-operation-their-way\/","title":{"rendered":"These forgotten Mogadishu vets remember the operation their way"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ed Ricord joined the Army in 1979, he trained as a medic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roland \u201cPoncho\u201d Carrizales signed up for the Army in 1991 and went to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/02\/the-battle-of-mogadishu-25-years-later-how-the-fateful-fight-changed-combat-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\">10th Mountain Division<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two would meet on a fateful day in 1993 that each remembers in the flashes of a firefight. Then they would meet again years later to mark what happened that day and rectify what failed to happen afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The men were serving in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2018\/10\/02\/the-battle-of-mogadishu-25-years-later-how-the-fateful-fight-changed-combat-operations\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mogadishu<\/a>, Somalia, running patrols in the dangerous city on a peacekeeping mission that would soon see some of the fiercest urban combat the U.S. military had faced since Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/armytimes\/news\/2022\/10\/06\/long-forgotten-black-hawk-down-unit-now-included-in-division-history\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Mog-Mile-2-14.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Long-forgotten \u2018Black Hawk Down\u2019 unit now included in division history<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Soldiers with 3rd Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment served as a quick reaction force, helping save soldiers in the battle.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s what many former members of that unit now call <a href=\"https:\/\/coffeeordie.com\/rescue-of-courage-53\/\" target=\"_blank\">the \u201cforgotten\u201d Black Hawk Down<\/a>. No, not the famed Task Force Ranger and Delta Force Oct. 3-4, 1993 battle, but a crash that preceded those incidents by a matter of days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no movie made, nor any shiny medals for the soldiers of 3rd Platoon, Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, attached to the division\u2019s Task Force 2-14.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they served in the same mission, braved the same dangers, lost lives and saved lives with nearly no fanfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sept. 25, 1993, Ricord rode out with company convoy to a Black Hawk helicopter crash site. Ricord spotted the remains of the helicopter crewmen at the airframe. He went to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter recovering both sets of remains all hell broke out with small arms fire,\u201d Ricord said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An officer called over that one of the convoy soldiers was wounded. Ricord rushed towards the gunfire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carrizales lay on the ground, bleeding from a gunshot to the neck, pinned under metal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI told him that he picked a great place to take a break and that I would take care of him,\u201d Ricord said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">30 years later, Carrizales told Army Times on Friday that he remembers Ricord before that firefight and the gunshot wound that paralyzed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"6000\" height=\"4000\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/230303-A-PO583-127.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-86729\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/230303-A-PO583-127.jpg.jpg 6000w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/230303-A-PO583-127.jpg.jpg?resize=300,200 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/230303-A-PO583-127.jpg.jpg?resize=768,512 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/230303-A-PO583-127.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,683 1024w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/230303-A-PO583-127.jpg.jpg?resize=1536,1024 1536w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/230303-A-PO583-127.jpg.jpg?resize=2048,1365 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 6000px) 100vw, 6000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Roland &#8220;Poncho&#8221; Carrizales, a wounded veteran, signed a Harley Davidson motorcycle specially built by fellow Mogadishu veteran Ed Ricord. Ricord and his wife Laura Ricord plan to tour the country with the motorcycle to collect signatures from remaining veterans and Gold Star Families, culminating in a presentation of the signed motorcycle to the 10th Mountain Division on the 30th anniversary of the battle. (Bethany Huff\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019d tag along on some of the missions,\u201d Carrizales said. The Texas native remembers Ricord saying he liked to go out with them because \u201cyou guys get into the shit every time we go out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ricord patched up Carrizales and others as best he could, as he\u2019d done for more than a decade and would do for more years than he cares to count until he retired from the Army. Then he went back to the mission and Carrizales went home to recover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than two decades later, Carrizales saw a Facebook comment from a friend of Ricord\u2019s who noticed some writing online about the incident by a fellow veteran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guy contacted him and asked if he\u2019d like to talk with Ricord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWho wouldn\u2019t?,\u201d Carrizales said. \u201cI owe my life for what he did out there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two met up and started a fast friendship. For years they\u2019ve called and messaged each other, checking in as old veterans do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, when Ricord called up a few weeks back and told Carrizales he was heading down to San Antonio to swing by the gravesite of another soldier friend, one who didn\u2019t survive that operation, Carrizales thought nothing of meeting up with his old medic buddy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Ricord had something special in tow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearly four years ago news came out about multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/12\/28\/congress-authorizes-medal-of-honor-for-5-soldiers-and-awards-upgrade-for-4-black-hawk-down-troops\/\" target=\"_blank\">medal upgrades<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2021\/07\/13\/jsocs-former-top-enlisted-soldier-will-be-one-of-60-black-hawk-down-award-upgrades\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rangers, Delta<\/a> and many 10th Mountain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/07\/01\/sixty-black-hawk-down-veterans-to-receive-upgraded-medals\/\" target=\"_blank\">soldiers who served in Operation Gothic Serpent<\/a>. (Bethany Huff\/Army)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He got to work creating his own special tribute \u2013 a custom rebuilt 1993 FLH Harley Davidson Eagle Eye Ultra Classic motorcycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paint job? Chocolate Chip desert Cammie, just like those the soldiers wore on their deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ricord and his wife Laura Ricord hauled that bike across the state of Texas and for a specific reason \u2013 so that Carrizales could be the first soldier in the unit to sign the bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on Friday, that\u2019s what he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt blew me away, honestly,\u201d Carrizales said. \u201cEd told me years back, \u2018I\u2019m gonna work on something for you guys. I thought it would be something small. I hope that it can bring us all together\u2026I think it\u2019d just give us closure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the bike will continue its journey to California, Alabama, Illinois, Iowa and Chicago between now and October, when Ricord will deliver the machine-turned-artwork to Fort Drum, New York so that 10th Mountain soldiers of today and the future will see that the soldiers of Charlie Company were not forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Carrizales plans to be there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There was no movie
