Sherman\u2019s Army career wasn\u2019t going too well after graduating sixth in his class at the U.S. Military Academy in 1840, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/learn\/biographies\/william-t-sherman\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">according to his biography<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilwar.org\/about\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Civil War Trust<\/a>, a nonprofit dedicated to the \u201cpreservation of America\u2019s hallowed battlegrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He resigned his commission in 1853, going into banking for a few years before becoming the superintendent of the Louisiana Military Academy in 1859.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when state succession and Civil War loomed a short time later, Sherman headed north. Rejoining the Army, Sherman was made a colonel of the 13th U.S. Infantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, of course, he would go on to lead troops throughout the South as a general, including his infamous \u201cMarch to the Sea,\u201d capturing Savannah, Georgia, in 1864.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite his abhorrence for the war, based on other quotes, Sherman\u2019s sense of duty is reflected in today\u2019s maxim.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>William T.
