in on a little known terror group called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/03\/05\/chinese-troops-appear-to-be-operating-in-afghanistan-and-the-pentagon-is-ok-with-it\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">East Turkestan Islamic Movement<\/a> (ETIM), U.S. officials are eyeing a potential <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2017\/11\/10\/trump-thinks-us-china-could-jointly-solve-worlds-problems\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">partnership with China<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ETIM operates near the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/2018\/02\/02\/now-chinas-helping-to-build-a-military-base-in-afghanistan\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover208860\">Afghan border with China<\/a> and Tajikistan, and has been highlighted as a security concern by the Chinese government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a series of U.S. airstrikes, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/01\/22\/pentagon-denies-isis-claim-of-killing-us-soldier\/\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Taliban training camps<\/a> and fighting positions that supported terrorist operations inside Afghanistan, as well as ETIM operations across the border, were destroyed, according to a press statement from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/flashpoints\/2018\/02\/01\/us-officials-push-back-against-report-on-losses-in-afghanistan\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\" target=\"_blank\" data-original-title=\"\" aria-describedby=\"popover740729\">NATO\u2019s Resolute Support<\/a> mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe U.S. strikes support Afghanistan in reassuring its neighbors that it is not a safe sanctuary for terrorists who want to carry out cross border operations,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2017\/07\/06\/us-china-grow-further-apart-as-north-korean-threat-rises\/\" North Korean threat rises<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">U.S. President Trump&#039;s hopes for China&#039;s help with restraining North Korea appear to have gone nowhere, with the two sides growing further apart as their approaches and concerns diverge.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ETIM terrorist organization has roots in the ethnic Uighur separatist groups of western China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group\u2019s \u201cmilitants have fought alongside al-Qaida and Taliban forces in Afghanistan, and are responsible for various terrorist acts inside and outside China,\u201d according to Resolute Support. \u201cIn May 2002, two ETIM members were deported to China from Kyrgyzstan for plotting to attack the U.S. Embassy in Kyrgyzstan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resolute Support added that the terror group poses a threat to China and enjoys support from the Taliban in Badakhshan province, and throughout the border region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"https:\/\/www.foreign.senate.gov\/hearings\/watch?hearingid=D1182028-5056-A066-600D-EF37B28E8E4F\" title=\"\" class=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Foreign Relations Committee<\/a> fired questions about U.S. strategy in Afghanistan at Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Affairs Randall Schriver and Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think there is the possibility that China, on the counter-terrorism front, could be a partner,\u201d Schriver said. \u201cThey certainly have their own concerns about terrorism within China, and the potential for linkages between terrorist groups operating elsewhere and for that to seep into China.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHistorically, we have run into some difficulties \u2014 what they define as a terrorist, particularly inside China and the way we look at things, there\u2019s an
