{"id":85177,"date":"2019-04-05T19:27:20","date_gmt":"2019-04-05T19:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/04\/05\/egyptian-special-forces-will-soon-get-a-wearable-heads-up-display\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T08:22:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T08:22:34","slug":"egyptian-special-forces-will-soon-get-a-wearable-heads-up-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/gearscout\/2019\/04\/05\/egyptian-special-forces-will-soon-get-a-wearable-heads-up-display\/","title":{"rendered":"Egyptian special forces will soon get a wearable heads up display"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Egypt\u2019s special operations forces will soon be on the receiving end of the Egyptian Integrated Soldier System &#8212; a helmet and weapon-mounted battlefield electronics system designed to bring Egpytian asymmetric warfare units closer to parity with their western counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Egypt\u2019s move comes at the same time as Russia\u2019s pursuit of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/off-duty\/gearscout\/2018\/09\/05\/this-is-russias-next-generation-combat-armor-suit-and-its-straight-out-of-robocop\/\" target=_blank>next-generation battle suit, known as Ratnik<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Ratnik places a heavy emphasis on broadly evolving the capabilities and survivability of the average Russian infantryman, EISS only aims to make special operations soldiers more electronically integrated with their teams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French military has already implemented something similar to EISS back in 2010, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army-technology.com\/projects\/felin\/\" target=_blank>known as FELIN<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Developed by Safran Electronics &amp; Defense, FELIN turns each individual soldier into a platform from which data can be gathered and disseminated on the battlefield via a central processing \u201cnerve center\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Optical sensors, imaging devices, an advanced communications suite, and helmet display which can feed the wearer imagery from various cameras and sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared to FELIN, EISS is a no-frills project that focuses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.janes.com\/article\/86767\/idex-2019-aio-develops-integrated-soldier-worn-display-for-egyptian-special-forces\" target=_blank>entirely on generating <\/a>and sharing critical pictures and videos between unit commanders and subordinates than it does enhance the user\u2019s communications systems as well as his protective gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">EISS\u2019s roll-out will consist of two basic configurations &#8212; the commander and the soldier system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soldier system uses a helmet-mounted eyepiece to bring up images from other electro-optical sensors <a href=\"https:\/\/gbp.com.sg\/egyptian-integrated-soldier-system-showcased-at-edex-2018\/\" target=_blank>plugged into <\/a>helmets, assault rifles, machine guns, and the daylight scopes of RPG-7 launchers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commander systems feature all of the above, plus a thermal sight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system\u2019s power comes from a rechargeable battery pack which is worn on the end user\u2019s belt, with the controls present on the power device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, it\u2019s unclear just how many Egyptian units will receive the final EISS product. The Egyptian Army maintains 8 special forces regiments, known as \u201cSa\u2019ka Forces\u201d (translated to Thunderbolt Forces), comprised of 24 battalions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s possible that the initial fielding will be limited some of the country\u2019s more secretive high speed outfits, such as Units 777 and 999, which function in a similar role to the British SAS or the US Army\u2019s Delta Force. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As development and production costs decrease, regimental Sa\u2019ka commandos will eventually find themselves equipped with the new helmet mounted displays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the Egypt historically maintaining a good relationship with Russia in terms of importing military hardware, it\u2019s also possible that EISS might remain a utility available only to special operations units while the country pursues buying an <a href=\"http:\/\/tass.com\/defense\/948469\" target=_blank>export version<\/a> of Ratnik for its conventional forces.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Ratnik places a heavy
