Here\u2019s how"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veterans Affairs officials have begun work to shift the bulk of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2021\/03\/19\/montgomery-or-post-911-which-gi-bill-is-right-for-you\/\" target=_blank>GI Bill benefits<\/a> operations to a new online platform, with the first changes visible to students by this fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, student veterans and college officials will be able to use the new digital offerings to chat in real time with VA claims staffers and answer questions about benefits. It will also ensure Veterans Benefits Administration officials have \u201cimmediate access\u201d to beneficiary records and troubleshoot issues with payments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials are touting the move as \u201cimproving education benefits and customer service delivery\u201d for the roughly 1 million students who use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2021\/03\/10\/a-brief-history-of-the-gi-bill\/\" target=_blank>GI Bill benefits<\/a> each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/03\/24\/renewed-push-to-make-more-guard-reserve-missions-count-towards-gi-bill-benefits\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1231493254.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Renewed push to make more Guard, Reserve missions count towards GI Bill benefits<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move would make more education benefits available to thousands of part-time troops.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department also hopes the changes will speed up delivery of new education claims. Currently, those take a month on average to complete, and are done through a mixture of traditional mail, phone calls or face-to-face meetings with processors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project \u2014 dubbed the Digital GI Bill modernization overhaul \u2014 will be paid for in large part with $243 million set aside by Congress in its March 2020 pandemic relief bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It isn\u2019t expected to be fully completed until October 2022. But department officials said some new online offerings are expected to be rolled out for the start of the fall 2021 semester, to include more access to \u201creal-time benefit information\u201d for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2021\/03\/10\/gi-bill-vets-may-be-less-attractive-to-for-profit-schools-under-new-law\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/4009400.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">GI Bill vets may be less attractive to for-profit schools under new law<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The 90\/10 loophole, a focus of education advocates for years, will disappear in coming years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement, acting VA Under Secretary for Benefits Thomas Murphy said the first contracts for the work were issued earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThroughout implementation, VA will seek feedback from students, schools and partners to ensure we are meeting their needs effectively as they pursue their academic and vocational goals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Post-9\/11 GI Bill \u2014 the benefit used by the vast majority of student veterans today \u2014 awards 36 months of in-state college tuition, a monthly living stipend and other payouts to individuals who have served at least three years on active-duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Payouts for an individual student can exceed $100,000.
