{"id":88923,"date":"2019-03-04T16:42:57","date_gmt":"2019-03-04T16:42:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/03\/04\/check-out-kalashnikovs-new-service-pistol\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:00:27","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:00:27","slug":"check-out-kalashnikovs-new-service-pistol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/2019\/03\/04\/check-out-kalashnikovs-new-service-pistol\/","title":{"rendered":"Check out Kalashnikov\u2019s new service pistol"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Russian military might have yet another pistol on its shopping list for 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the past 30 years, the Russian army has experimented with developing and fielding a wide variety of pistols to replace the geriatric and downright obsolete Makarov PM, which first entered service in the 1950s and has soldiered on without any major update through the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2003, the Makarov\u2019s first successor, the MP-443 Grach (or PYa) appeared after a 10-year development and testing period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, it has served as the de facto sidearm of the Russian army \u2014 though not necessarily the improvement Russian infantrymen were looking for in a pistol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reliability <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/russia\/448153-russia-new-pistol-udav-boa\/\" target=\"_blank\">concerns with the PYa<\/a> have prompted the military to begin their pistol acquisition process anew, while continuing to issue both the PYa and the Makarov until a more long-term solution can be built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PL-15-1.jpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-91645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PL-15-1.jpg.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PL-15-1.jpg.jpg?resize=300,169 300w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PL-15-1.jpg.jpg?resize=768,432 768w, https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/PL-15-1.jpg.jpg?resize=1024,576 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The PL-15 in operation, fired by former Delta Force operator Larry Vickers during a Kalashnikov showcase (Photo Screengrab from Kalashnikov Concern)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rostec, the massive state-owned aerospace, defense and technology conglomerate, put forward one design in the form of the Udav, a Double Action Only offering, just last year through its TSNIITOCHMASH corporation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, everybody\u2019s favorite rifle manufacturer, Kalashnikov Concern, has thrown its hat into the ring with a pistol of its own \u2014 the PL-15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Essentially the same size as Glock 19, the PL-15 is a further development of a gun Kalashnikov has been working on for years, having first introduced a prototype in 2015. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PL-15, like its Glock counterpart, is chambered for 9&#215;19 mm Luger, popular in the west. but mostly unheard of in conventional Russian military units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The PL-15 comes in two major frames \u2014 the regular -15 and the compact -15K \u2014 both of which use a locking system similar to that found in the Browning Hi Power handgun. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recognizable and generic layout of the pistol allows for a fairly easy learning curve for the end user. All PL-15s are <a href=\"https:\/\/modernfirearms.net\/en\/handguns\/handguns-en\/russia-semi-automatic-pistols\/lebedev-pl-15-eng\/\" target=_blank>built with ambidextrous magazine<\/a> releases, slide locks and manual safeties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The -15 uses a 4.4 inch barrel, while the more concealable -15K comes with a shorter 3.2 inch barrel. Both frames have an under-barrel rail for a clip-on laser or a flashlight, and both guns use dovetailed iron sights. If necessary, both barrels can be acquired in threaded form, allowing for the use of a suppressor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kalashnikov expects to begin mass-producing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefirearmblog.com\/blog\/2018\/09\/19\/kalashnikov-to-begin-production-of-pl-15-in-2019\/\" target=_blank>PL-15 later this year<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since the company is owned by Rostec, it\u2019s possible that it might take a back seat to the Udav for the time being, with regards to marketing the weapon to the Russian military. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the PL-15 could find itself being picked up earlier on by law enforcement and VIP protection units, before the Army considers it as an
