{"id":90766,"date":"2022-05-17T21:25:13","date_gmt":"2022-05-17T21:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/05\/17\/new-military-suicide-prevention-study-group-to-begin-work-this-summer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T09:19:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T09:19:59","slug":"new-military-suicide-prevention-study-group-to-begin-work-this-summer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/05\/17\/new-military-suicide-prevention-study-group-to-begin-work-this-summer\/","title":{"rendered":"New military suicide prevention study group to begin work this summer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Defense Department officials on Tuesday unveiled members of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/03\/22\/an-independent-commission-will-review-the-militarys-suicide-prevention-efforts\/\" target=\"_blank\">panel charged with studying suicide prevention<\/a> and behavioral health programs across the services, and the nine military installations they\u2019ll visit in coming months to evaluate what fixes need to be put in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Suicide Prevention and Response Independent Review, mandated by Congress last year, will include experts in substance abuse, mental health services and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/09\/22\/va-zeroes-in-on-gun-safety-as-a-way-to-reduce-veteran-suicides\/\" target=\"_blank\">lethal weapons safety<\/a>, as well as a pair of retired military officers to provide insights into problems in the ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move comes after years of emphasis on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/09\/30\/military-suicides-up-15-percent-in-2020-but-officials-dont-blame-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\">suicide prevention and mental health assistance<\/a> for servicemembers, but with little discernable impact on the overall problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/09\/30\/military-suicides-up-15-percent-in-2020-but-officials-dont-blame-pandemic\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5735726.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Military suicides up 16 percent in 2020, but officials don\u2019t blame pandemic<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">While the numbers jumped 15 percent over 2019, the rate went up 2-per-100,000.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Defense Department saw a 16 percent increase in the number of suicides among troops in 2020, with 580 deaths total.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In announcing the new panel on Tuesday, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said the group will provide a \u201cpublic health approach to suicide prevention\u201d for the department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The panel will be led by Dr. Gayle Iwamasa, a clinical psychologist who currently works as a program director in the Department of Veteran Affairs\u2019 Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr. Stephanie Gamble, deputy director of VA\u2019s Center of Excellence for Suicide Prevention, will also serve as a suicide prevention expert for the panel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Craig Bryan, a behavioral health professor at Ohio State University, will serve as the panel\u2019s expert on lethal weapons safety, a controversial topic give the political fighting on Capitol Hill over gun control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But public health experts have noted that nearly 70 percent of veterans suicides annually are a result of firearms use, making the issue a key in prevention efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Army Surgeon General Nadja West, former Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force Kaleth Wright and Carl Trost, a retired Navy chaplain, will serve as consultants for the board. Kathy Robertson, a clinical social worker whose husband and two sons all served in the military, will offer a military family perspective as another consultant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also on the panel are Rajeev Remchand, a longtime military mental health researcher,  and Rebecca Blais, an associate professor of psychology at Arizona State University. Jerry Reed, who previously worked as the suicide prevention lead at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, will serve as an additional consultant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Site visits scheduled for the group include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, in July;<\/li><li>Fort Campbell, Kentucky, in August;<\/li><li>Naval Air Station North Island, California; in August;<\/li><li>North Carolina National Guard, in September;<\/li><li>Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in September;<\/li><li>Camp Humphreys, South Korea, in September;<\/li><li>Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Fort Wainwright, and Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska, in October.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/03\/22\/an-independent-commission-will-review-the-militarys-suicide-prevention-efforts\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/6829847.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">An independent commission will review the military\u2019s suicide prevention efforts<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">An independent review commission will report its findings to the defense secretary later this year.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Alaska military bases are of particular interest because of a spate of suicides there in recent months. At least 11 soldiers stationed in Alaska died by suicide in 2021, with several more still under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An initial report is expected from the group in December, with a final draft due in February.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Troops of veterans experiencing a mental health emergency can contact the Veteran Crisis Line at 1-800-273-8255 and select option 1 for a VA staffer. Veterans, troops or their family members can also text 838255 or visit <\/i><a href=\"http:\/\/veteranscrisisline.net\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>VeteransCrisisLine.net<\/i><\/a><i> for
